  • Nearly wild site at the foot of The Long Mynd in the Shropshire Hills
  • Ten minutes’ drive to Stokesay Castle, and 25 minutes to Ludlow
  • Picnic benches, firepits and composting loos; shops 10 minutes’ drive
The Shropshire Hills sit between wild Welsh mountains and the flat landscapes of Central England. And set in the shadow of the heather-clad Long Mynd ridge, Hamperley Hideaways is as ‘in between’ as its location – it’s almost-wild camping with a few extras thrown in – and on a site where neighbouring tents are so far away that you simply can’t see them. Based on a 100-acre sheep farm, ‘wild-ish’ Hamperley Hideaways has individual pitches located in the corners of fields or under the trees. Owner Ryan won’t be too far away if you need anything during your stay, but generally you’re left pretty much to your own devices. On arrival, collect wood and water from the farm, leave your car in the designated parking area and then take the short walk to your pitch – family-friendly pitches are just a couple of minutes walk, while some are up to ten minutes away on foot. You’ll understand the ‘-ish’ of this ‘wild-ish’ campsite when you arrive at your pitch – namely bonuses like a picnic bench, a ready-dug, stone-encircled firepit and – joy-of-joys for most guests – your very own exclusive-use composting loo. Once settled, you can hike or bike straight out onto The Long Mynd, go wild swimming or simply chill in nature around your pitch. If you need a restock of supplies (or a pint in the pub), head for the pretty market town of Church Stretton (10 minutes’ drive).

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (wild)

Liked: Second time we have been and we love it. We love the peace and that we have the camp to ourselves. The grandkids love the rope climbing up the hill. Great base to explore church Stretton hills. Would recommend if you don’t mind living wild.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Wife and I had fab time staying one night in the Shepherds hut. Beautiful scenery all around, lovely campsite, the hut is amazing, so cosy and comfortable with a nice old log fire to keep us warm on a chilly night. Loved it.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (wild)

Liked: The peace, quiet and little set up of picnic tables and a fire pit. Places to explore and ease of access. Toilet was clean with enough facilities for a one or two night stay.

Disliked: Couldn’t find bins. There is a very steep drop (see pics) so I wouldn’t recommend to families with toddlers.

Local attractions

The campsite is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with footpaths and bridleways crossing the heathland ridge of The Long Mynd, so you can soon be out admiring the hilly landscapes. From the Visitor Centre at Carding Mill Valley (15 minutes’ drive), take a dip in Carding Mill Reservoir (five minutes’ stroll from the car park), or head up to the dramatic Lightspout Waterfall (an hour). Meet the mammoth skeleton at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, where you can also learn about regional history at the interactive exhibition, enjoy a delicious afternoon tea and walk it off again in 30 acres of riverside meadows. Close by is Stokesay Castle (both 10 minutes’ drive), open for tours of the 700-year-old Great Hall and its half-timbered, ochre-coloured gatehouse. For more medieval architecture, the ‘black-and-white’ market town of Ludlow (25 minutes) is packed with timber-framed houses, and has a Norman-era castle to explore as well as gentle strolls along the River Teme. This historic town also has a thoroughly modern dining scene, with all manner of options from tapas to traditional pub grub.
