  • Fabulous location on the south edge of Rutland Water near Manton
  • An hour's walk to Normanton Church; Oakham 10 minutes' drive
  • Quiet site with lake views; barbecues and campfires permitted
Looking at the lush rural surroundings of Rutland Water these days, it’s hard to believe this is a man-made lake… but man-made it is indeed, and in fact the largest of its kind in England. It’s both quite a feat of design and a fabulous bit of scenery – and it makes a gorgeous backdrop for stays at The Hide at Manton Bay, in a stunning location right by the lake’s edge on the south side of Rutland Water. That means you’ll be able to look out over the water at all hours from this lovely spot surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. And of course you’ll also have prime position for all the activities on offer around the lake, including cycle rides, fishing, kayaking, golf and madcap antics at the inflatable aqua park. That said, it’s quite possible that your activity of choice may be simply strolling to the local pub (20 minutes’ walk away in Manton) before an evening of barbecuing and stargazing back at base camp. In terms of practicalities, the site has bathrooms with showers and toilets, and provides recycling facilities to help keep things eco friendly. It’s a quiet site with no amplified music allowed so that everyone can enjoy a good bit of peace while they’re here. There’s a good cluster of shops and places to eat 10 minutes’ drive away in Oakham, with more dotted around local villages.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Large spacious pitches with mature hedging with cracking views of Rutland Water. Nice and quiet adult only site. Great location easy to get everywhere. Lovely nursery and cafe a short walk up the hill. Always had hot water when showering and washing up.

Disliked: Showers were basic and quite a walk from the pitches. Didn't like separate locks on inside and outside and potential for someone to lock you in. Would have liked a modesty shower curtain as quite big gaps in door. No pegs/shelving in one of the showers so everything got wet. Decking outside was very slippery when wet. No cover over outside washing up area. No ability to recycle cans, plastic, paper.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: The owners were lovely and communicated with us well, the view was amazing and there was a good amount of privacy between the pitches! The facilities were decent enough. We’d want to stay again but only in fair weather.

Disliked: Despite claiming to be a quiet / adult only site, there were rowdy campers who were very loud well past the curfew of 10pm. They also brought a baby with them, so these factors did disturb the peaceful scenery somewhat and was disappointing when we had hoped for a quiet site. The pitches were mowed but the cut grass was just left on the pitches so dead grass was constantly tracked and blown into the tent. Raking it to the side or collecting it would have made a huge difference. I think £40 per night for a non-electric grass pitch is rather steep considering these factors weren’t thought about. We adored the location and the owners seemed nice but had the weather not been amazing I don’t think it would have been worth the price, which is a shame because it was so promising.
