  • Luxury shepherd's huts in the grounds of an Oxfordshire community pub
  • Close to Thames Path walks; 25 minutes' drive to Oxford
  • Ensuite bathroom, kingsize bed and log burner for each hut
The cosy huts at Northmoor Shepherd’s Huts have been kitted out with lots of luxury touches, and they’re fabulous in their own right… but the offering here gets even better when you hear that they’re set in the grounds of a community pub… That means it’s only a very short stroll from your accommodation to drinks and/or dinner in an award-winning pub, which has local ales on tap and a particularly impressive gin collection as well as a food menu of pub classics and pizzas. It was bought by the local community in 2014 – and you can see why they’d want to preserve the place, with its characterful beamed ceilings and log fires along with a lovely beer garden. The accommodation is just as lovely – guests stay in smart shepherd’s huts parked among the orchard and kitchen garden, with free-range hens roaming around. Inside, they’re light and airy but kept warm by a log burner and heater. Each one has an ensuite bathroom and a good clutch of facilities including a kingsize bed, a TV, a fridge and a kettle. A continental-style breakfast (croissants, toast, granola, fruit, yogurt and coffee) will be delivered to your hut each morning for a tasty start to the day. As for the rest of the day, this Oxfordshire location 15 minutes’ drive from Witney offers up all sorts of options, including walks along the Thames Path, outings to Oxford, strolls around Blenheim Palace and exploring the pretty villages of the Cotswolds.

Local attractions

Oxford (25 minutes’ drive) is a fine place for a day out, dipping in and out of the colleges, visiting the Ashmolean Museum and perhaps having a go at punting on the river. There are some great shops too, although for more on that front you may like to try Bicester Village (35 minutes). Once you’ve seen the grand buildings of Oxford, there’s more on that front in the form of Blenheim Palace (20 minutes), where you can walk in the footsteps of Winston Churchill as you tour the state rooms and explore the grounds. The Cotswolds also offers up lots of lovely places to visit, including Burford (20 minutes), Bibury (35 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water (40 minutes). Sticking to the outdoors, you may like to take in some of the scenery from a walk along the Thames Path (a short walk from the pub) or head to Newbridge (five minutes’ drive) to launch canoe or kayak trips (you can rent from here or bring your own).

The Den shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Comfy bed, lovely pub, great food, well kept, peaceful setting, outdoor spaces with huts overlooking church and a few chickens. Great shower and the whole hut clean as a new pin! Friendly welcoming village atmosphere. Great communications and friendly helpful staff. Log burners in pub and hut.

Disliked: Not dislikes at all but would have been even better if:-
there has been a cooked breakfast option in the pub.
Something was provided to put breakfast plates on, such as a folding table during colder seasons, as the outside tables would be fine on dry warmer mornings.
