  • Spacious and grassy site on the banks of the River Trent
  • Watersports centre and several theme parks a short drive away
  • Riverside walks and bike rides, boat trips and restaurants nearby
Shoot along for a stay here… you'll have enough to do in scenic surrounds to keep you occupied for aeons. Gunthorpe Camping is a small family-friendly site set on a level grassy paddock next to the River Trent, making it most handy for riverside walks and bike rides direct from the grounds, and canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boat trips all nearby. There's also the National Watersports Centre and Sundown Adventureland within 40 minutes' drive… and when you're tuckered out and back at base, several good bars and restaurants are within a short stroll. The grassy paddock is open and surrounded by hedges and mature trees, so you'll have plenty of space to spread out as well as hunker down when the mood takes you. You should have a peaceful and comfy stay here too: the grounds are well-maintained and the showers in the bright clean washrooms have plenty of hot water. Barbecues are allowed, so it's all systems go if you want to grill up an alfresco feast by the riverbank.

What customers say

Peaceful, well-kept campground with spacious, level sites by a great river for walks. Friendly owners, easy access, and secure entry are appreciated. Nearby pubs/eateries are a plus. Facilities are clean but basic; some desire more frequent cleaning. Owners promptly address noise issues.

Liked Lovely site, very well organised, I received a message with all info for a smooth arrival to the site on the day. As a family we are new to camping and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend here. My children "unplugged" and enjoyed playing family games, walks next to the canal and watching the birds roam freely. Thankyou for having us!

Liked Despite the persistent September rain, our trip was an absolute delight. The campsite is wonderfully straightforward and simple, with a well-maintained field and all the essential facilities. Lovely Guinea fowls running across the field! The location is a huge plus, as the village of Gunthorpe is a short stroll away and truly charming, offering plenty of inviting pubs. Even with the wet weather, our spirits were lifted by the memorable sight of a Lancaster bomber flying overhead.

Disliked To be honest, we had such a lovely time that there was nothing we disliked about our stay. The simple nature of the campsite and the rain didn't detract from our experience; they were just part of the adventure.

Liked Rural location near River Trent and three pubs nearby serving food, clean toilets, resident non-roaming ducks.

Disliked We had booked electric hook-up but were allocated a pitch without it. However this was quickly resolved.

Local attractions

Despite the industrial past and present, Nottinghamshire has many fab natural landscapes: the wetlands at Skylarks Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive from the site are as rich with feathered life as any you'll see on TV nature channels. For more adventurous hours, there's go-karting 15 minutes' drive away in Netherfield, and a massive array of high octane stuff (not all of it watery) at the National Watersports Centre (20 minutes' drive) including Segway rides, high ropes, wakeboarding and rafting. Then there's Sherwood Forest and Sherwood Forest Pines Park 40 minutes away… a leafy combination of legend, history, nature reserve, country park and adventure centre, with hiking and biking trails through 450 acres of ancient oaks and wildlife. Adventureseekers can see it from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at the award-winning natural play area Robin Hood’s Hideout. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventureland (40 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s; Twinlakes Park offers birds of prey shows and creepy critters along with its waterpark and rollercoaster rides, and for the real big-ride fanatics, it's an hour and a half to Alton Towers. It's half an hour to Nottingham for tours of the castle and the caves, stopping for snifters in Ye Trip To Jerusalem and ice skating at Motorpoint Arena. You could also hire bikes for a trip through Colwick Country Park (20 minutes' drive), a pleasant combo of woodlands, lakes, meadows and playgrounds where you can swim, fish, walk, sail and spot wildlife.
