  • Eco-friendly site on the Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire borders
  • A 25-minute drive from Silverstone Circuit and Broughton Castle
  • A 10-minute walk to a café, a shop and a gastropub with a beer garden
Simple eco-friendly stays on the south Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire borders with lots of country strolls, barbecues and sweet quality time… if that has you thinking ‘sign me up’, set your wheels into motion and get out to the Sunnyfield Culworth Campsite, 25 minutes’ drive away from the Silverstone Circuit in Oxfordshire. The site’s goal is to be eco-friendly in everything they do, so facilities at-hand include composting toilets and urinals made from items around the farm. There are several taps, so it’ll be easy to top up your water bottle and flasks before setting off on the local footpaths. And in case you get carried away with your barbecues and can’t quite finish off all the trimmings, there’s also food waste disposal (all other rubbish must be taken away). In all, this is the place to go if you’re craving a simple, back to basics getaway. The village, Culworth, is 10 minutes’ walk away and has a café for all your coffee and cake needs, a butchers (that’s the barbecue ingredients sorted) and a shop. The site says this shop produces some mighty-fine chipolatas, which might just be the icing on top. For pints and pub meals, there’s also an 18th-century village pub with a beer garden, gastro pub-style food and a barn shop selling local home-baked goods, sandwiches, deli produce, pies, ice cream and fresh fruit and veg. Those who like to take in some of the history of each place they visit will be set here. The National Trust’s Canons Ashby, an Elizabethan manor house, is 10 minutes’ drive away and Sulgrave Manor, belonging to George Washington’s family, is five minutes’ drive away. There’s also a gorgeous village church.

Oakfield primitive grass and earth campervan campsite (no pets)

Liked The natural setting was superb. Saw kestrels, red kites and skylarks among others. The site is in a quiet location and within a walk of the village which has a butchers cum greengrocers and a coffee shop that sells beer and wine (and coffee and cake). The welcome we received was second to none, the owners are very genial and helpful. The site is rudimentary compared to some, but has functional (hot water) showers, toilets and fresh water and the rest is what you make it.
Ramps might be useful for campervanners on some areas of the site and a torch for after dark

Oakfield primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite (no pets)

Liked I really don't think I can do this campsite justice but I will try. It was exactly what we needed. Exceedingly peaceful. From dawn to dusk we were surrounded by birdsong that was just lovely. It's far enough away from busy roads that the road noise is so minimal. Beautiful meadow field to pitch a tent in, and exactly the sort of place I love spending time in.
The facilities were as described but what the description fails to mention is the attention to detail in every aspect of it. The composting toilets were spotlessly clean with plenty of loo roll, sawdust, and hand sanitizer. No smell at all from the toilets, I challenge you to find cleaner and better maintained toilets than these! The little touches like lights that came on at night, but clear panels letting daylight in the day meant you weren't shocked by bright lights for your pre bed wee. The washing up area had hand soap for post toilet visits and lovely wash basins for washing up your dishes. The showers were brilliant, normally 3 showers are available, but nesting birds meant only 2 were available which is fine by me. It's nice having campsite owners who care about the environment. Showering there was an absolute delight, private cubicles with fresh air so it didn't get steamy (a pet peeve of mine!) Perfect water temperature, which the owners assured us they could change if it didn't suit us. A little caddy for your shampoo etc and plentiful hooks for your towel and a shower curtain to stop you getting your towel wet- they really thought of everything! Apart from the facilities the care and attention the owners paid to maintaining them is amazing, they really are a hard working pair.
Now... onto the vibe. Relaxed, fuss free camping. A relaxed, "choose your own location" meant a well spread out vibe and peaceful community. We only stayed 2 nights but very much feel like I got a week's worth of relaxation out of it. The owners recommended the local pub (The Red Lion in Culworth) and a foot path leading to it, both were excellent and very welcome. A gentle foot path with only a slight incline to reach the village- though beware I did receive a jump scare from a pheasant. If you want a peaceful escape in the best of what the british countryside has to offer then book here right now.
If I haven't convinced you... the owners are some of the loveliest people I have met who own a campsite. Helpful and knowledgeable but also realise you are there for a peaceful time so aren't intrusive. As good as the humans are the doggy owner Maggie is a special soul- she is joy in dog form. But rest assured if you are not a dog lover, her humans have her under great control and she only says hello if you are willing too (which I very much am!) So if you are not a dog lover don't be put off.

All in all, it was an outstanding weekend as true rural gem of a campsite.

Oakfield primitive grass and earth campervan campsite (no pets)

Liked Wonderful, scenic peaceful location with far reaching views from the Oakfield location. Penny met us on arrival and was very welcoming and helpful. We had lunch at the Red Lion a short walk away in Culworth which was also very nice.

Liked Spacious. Eco site. Friendly owner

Disliked Slightly overpriced for the very basic facilities in our opinion which could be why we had the whole site to ourselves!

From the manager: I’m sorry you feel we are over price , your initial payment is a booking fee this does not come to us .
We do advertise as a back to basic campsite , if we upgrade our facilities we would not be eco friendly , which In turn would effect our carbon footprint and would not benefit nature. Also all the compost made gets used around the farm when planting new trees and hedgerow which all benefits the environment.
We spread our campers over two sites so it should always be relaxing and quiet.

Local attractions

A little of the town, please? Catch racing events in Towcester (25 minutes’ drive) or take yourself on a day trip to Northampton (40 minutes), where there’s a local history museum, country park and the Barnes Meadow Nature Reserve. There are a few unique ways to take in the Oxfordshire landscapes, beginning with a farm-based llama trek at Catanger Llama Trekking (15 minutes). Those who want to push their limits a little can get a birds’ eye view with a tandem skydive organised by the Hinton Sky Diving Centre Ltd (20 minutes) too. Morning swim? Daventry Country Park (25 minutes) runs open-water swimming in the summer (and fishing at other times of year). Or perhaps a little cruise down Oxfordshire’s long canal network? There are lots of marinas around, such as the Cropredy Waterside & Marina (15 minutes). Those who’d like to take in a little more history can bet only plenty of that at Broughton Castle (25 minutes), as the medieval manor house is surrounded by a huge moat.
