  • Peaceful Leicestershire site on a rural hillside
  • Leicester city centre and Rutland Water both 20 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A47; surrounded by tree belt for quiet and privacy
The centre of Leicester is only about a 20-minute drive from Fox’s Furrow – and yet this site’s immediate surroundings are properly peaceful and rural, with fields and natural countryside views all around. The beauty of all this, of course, is that you can have a nicely varied stay here if you like, perhaps pedalling along National Cycle Route 63 one day (it’s about a mile away) and then heading into the city to visit the National Space Centre the next. There’s a bus stop just under a mile away in the village of Houghton on the Hill if you’d rather travel by public transport. Also in the village are a couple of pubs, a village shop, a pharmacy and a fish and chip shop – all of it handily a short walk away across the fields (or a couple of minutes in the car). Getting in, out and all around should be straightforward here as the site is about a quarter of a mile from the A47; there’s no hint of the main road while on site, though, as the place has a very natural feel to it and is surrounded by a tree belt that provides plenty of privacy as well as acting as a home to local wildlife. In keeping with this rural setting, facilities have been kept to a minimum here – the essentials are covered, however, with a wifi connection, a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities housed in a very stylishly decorated classic shepherd’s hut.

What customers say

This tidy, quiet campsite offers a rural escape with great, clean shepherd's huts & hot showers. Guests love the easy communication, secure spot & good WiFi. Ideal for exploring local sights & nice walks. Some pitches are sloped & electrical hook-ups have low amperage, but levelling chocks are available.

Liked Lovely well kept small site and easy to find straight off the A47. Good simple communication from owner and easy check in and out. So quiet at night in a safe secure location. Good quality pitch (No.5). Cute shepherds hut for toilets, showers and wash up. All spotlessly clean. Excellent wifi. Took a circular walk taking in Ingarsby medieval village. Muddy but fun. You must visit the Rose & Crown. Really friendly owners and staff. The food was quality with service to match. 3 screens showed cricket, football and rugby. Kids welcome. 30 minute drive to Rutland Water main csr park. All in all, Fox's Furrow is a superb site. Definitely recommend.

Disliked Nothing. All good.

Liked The quiet rural setting and excellent bespoke facilities create the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed break

We loved the breakfast box and its contents, delivered courtesy of the Psychedelic Squirrel

Dry standings and solid access drive meant that midwinter mud wasn’t much of an issue

Disliked As stated elsewhere wattage of electric appliances may be a factor to consider

Liked We only stayed one night and it’s a shame our weekend plans meant it wasn’t longer.
The site was quiet and peaceful.
Checking in and out was simple, with a few text messages with the owner.
Despite the recent rain meaning mud was everywhere, all the facilities were clean and tidy.
The washing up station had a large sink and the water was piping hot, making washing up so much easier than in our tiny van sink.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Getting out to see more of your rural surroundings should be easy enough here, as there are some great walks in the vicinity, along with those bike rides on National Cycle Route 63. Rutland Water (20 minutes’ drive) is another good place for a walk or a bike ride (there’s a path that goes all the way round the lake), and you can also play golf, try your hand at sailing or bounce across the inflatable aqua park. If the kids are keen to meet cute animals, head along to Windmill Farm Park (15 minutes) for indoor and outdoor animals, play areas and a café. Bird on the Hand Falconry Experiences (15 minutes) makes a great day out for those keen to get up close to the big birds. Over in Leicester (20 minutes) there are plenty of options for a day out (especially if you need rainy-day activities) – the city is home to the National Space Centre as well as the Retro Computer Museum and King Richard III Visitor Centre.
