  • Rural farm site with views over the Welland Valley
  • Market Harborough 10 minutes' drive; Rutland Water 40 minutes
  • Explore 100 acres of farmland; direct links to footpaths
A warm rural welcome is assured at this working farm in Leicestershire, where you can explore 100 acres of farmland and enjoy sweeping views over the gorgeous Welland Valley. Wheathill Field is in a convenient location just under 10 minutes' drive from the popular town of Market Harborough and its many amenities, while many other attractions and activities within similarly easy reach. Handily, its level and very well-maintained camping pitches have super easy access for wider vehicles – and dogs are welcome too. Once you've settled in, you can amble around the whole farm at your leisure; more serious walkers can take the footpaths accessible straight from site, including the historic Jurassic Way, for hikes further afield. Interestingly enough, this site includes an area of rare grasses on steep banks formed during the last Ice Age – take a five-minute walk from the pitches if you fancy seeing them for yourself. Market Harborough is very handy to have so close by too, with great independent shops and restaurants plus a spacious park with a kids' play area and a fenced dog exercise area. A large sports centre with a pool, gym and tennis courts is also open to visitors.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely, spacious grass pitch on a working farm. Fairly level. Dark sky at night and extremely quiet. Great views in good weather. Drinking water was easily accessible to pitches. About 10 min drive to Market Harborough. Grey waste and toilet waste also nearby. We only had a 1 night stay on our way further east. WiFi was available but we didn't use it. Phone and TV signal very good.

Disliked: Toilet emptying was reached by climbing steps and emptying into a high container. Steps had handrail but might still be slippery in wet/cold weather. Might not be suitable for someone with mobility issues

Liked: The views are stunning. The site is super peaceful. The location is rustic, easy to find and the owners are friendly and helpful. With it being on top of a hill it is super windy. You also have cow friends to keep you company.

Liked: What a fantastic location - loved it, loved it, loved it. Joanna was attentive and friendly - just great and I have fallen in love with the area. I shall be back, and better still, Joanna offers B&B accom all year round!! It offers exactly what it says - a great view with basic-to-no facilities: PERFECT camping in my opinion.

Disliked: Nothing, don't change a thing

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I loved my stay here in a tent. It was lovely and quiet. Such beautiful views. I just sat and watched the misty sunrise, the changing weather, and stunning sunsets. I was worried it would be smelly next to the cows but it wasn't at all. In fact, the calves and cows were very entertaining. Jo and Richard and family were so friendly and helpful. I was invited in to the cow shed to see a new born calf being licked clean by its mum. It is quite an exposed site on top of a hill, I'll take a wind break next time. There is only one portaloo and you need a strong constitution to cope with the wiff 😀 but there are only a few pitches so there aren't any queues. I did a lot of cycling, the area is excellent for this as the roads are very quiet, and there is the Brampton Way nearby.

Local attractions

The Battle of Naseby of 1645 took place locally – in fact, Wheathill Farm sits on a part of that history, as the Royalists came over these fields during their retreat. The surrounding area has a lot of historic sites worth seeing too, with highlights including stately homes and gardens like Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens (five minutes' drive), Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and the Althorp Estate (30 minutes). Walks or cycle rides along the Grand Union Canal are also on the cards, as the site is about a quarter of an hour from the staircase locks at Foxton; a canal museum is also located here if you want to learn more. For more time by the water, you could drive out to Pitsford Water (20 minutes) for a fishing trip, or pack up a picnic and set out for Rutland Water (40 minutes), where watersports like canoeing and kayaking are possible as well as birdwatching and walking. Got kids to keep entertained? Take them along to the National Space Centre (45 minutes) in central Leicester, to the rides at Drayton Manor Theme Park (an hour) or to Twycross Zoo (an hour) to see the animals.
