Nearly wild site (added by manager 12 jun 2020)

  • Peaceful woodland site on the border between Hertfordshire and Essex
  • On the outskirts of Broxbourne; 20 minutes' drive from Hertford
  • Waterside views and great public transport links
Forget about 'getting back to nature' – when you rock up at Lee Valley Almost Wild Campsite you'll feel like you never left it in the first place. This peaceful back to basics campsite sits close to the Hertfordshire–Essex border and has gorgeous views over mature woodland and a grassy glade. Water surrounds the site on three sides too, which makes this spot promising indeed for relaxing breaks – a riverside pub, watersports centre and boat hire shop are all within comfortable walking distance. Facilities at Lee Valley Almost Wild Campsite have been stripped down to the bare necessities so you can spend as much time as possible soaking up the site's all-natural vibes (think compost toilets and no on-site showers). Brought a hammock? Here you'll be welcome to sling it between a couple of trees and bivouac under the stars. Such lightweight sleeping arrangements are particularly likely to suit those arriving here without a car. It’s extra easy to avoid spending long hours on the road at this well-connected spot, as Lee Valley Almost Wild Campsite is just over a quarter of a mile from Broxbourne station. Stick around in Broxbourne to make use of its handy range of shops, pubs and takeaways. Not that you'll have to eat out here if you don't want to – this site welcomes barbecues and campfires.

Primitive grass tent campsite (riverside)

Liked: Location of site

Disliked: Our riverside pitch R12 was close to the two composting toilets. We could smell urine most of the weekend which was really unpleasant as you can imagine. There were large party groups in the other pitches and the large number of people must have been to much for the two toilets to cope with . I will not be staying again unless I can guarantee I can book a pitch further away from the toilets next . ☹️

Liked: Beautiful riverside pitches, friendly atmosphere with staff and other campers. Quiet and serene.

Disliked: The compost toilets weren’t as clean as they could have been, and the bins were never emptied while I was there

Primitive grass tent campsite (riverside)

Liked: I like the tidiness, the care taken by the employees. I also like how the river pitches are clearly marked and divided. I also like the fireplace and the benches by the river. A nice place to sit and and enjoy nature. A nice little place hidden in plain sight. I will definitely recommend and return. Very well done!

Primitive grass tent campsite (riverside)

Liked: Beautiful site. Great pitches. If I'd had company we'd have had that log pit fired up. This was part of a bikepacking trip and you've no idea how please we were with the benches at the pitches. Perhaps not strictly 'wild' but very, very welcome

Disliked: The walk back from the road to camp in the dark was pretty spooky. And, I'm a huge hairy Glaswegian

Local attractions

This site has particularly advantageous access to sporting jaunts in the surrounding area. For starters, there's the fact that you're a 25-minute walk from ESSA Water Activities Centre where taster sessions, crash courses and in-depth lessons can be arranged for activities as varied as windsurfing, powerboating, rafting and sailing. If you'd rather practice your teeing instead, there's also nearby Nazeing Golf Course (10 minutes' drive). If the peace and quiet of golf has you hooked, you may well appreciate similarly serene local activities like birdwatching at RSPB Rye Meads (10 minutes) or touring the many quiet corners of the National Trust's Morven Park (20 minutes). Younger travellers who like to be a bit more boisterous, meanwhile, have plenty of hands-on rural activities on hand at Lee Valley Park Farms (10 minutes). When it's time to spend a spell in town, there are ample options in Hertford (20 minutes), where a theatre, castle and interesting museum will tide you over nicely if you're at a loose end. For a car-free day trip somewhere new, let the train drop you off in the centre of historic Cambridge (45 minutes by train or an hour by car).
