  • Wild site by the River Ash, 15 minutes' drive from Bishop's Stortford
  • Forage on site for elderberries, rosehips and edible Himalayan blossom
  • Within 40 minutes' drive of Audley End and Knebworth House
Tired of the rat race? Badgered by modern life? Take yourself off to Toad Abode and rediscover the English countryside. This wild site by the River Ash in Hertfordshire is 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop’s Stortford and surrounded by trees, hedgerows and fields. There’s a toilet block and somewhere to park your vehicles... and the rest is up to you. When all that fresh air makes you famished, forget the shops and connect with your inner cave dweller: edible Himalayan blossom grows around the site, along with elderberries, rosehips, nettles and fungi… all just there for the foraging. Take it a level further and cook your collected victuals on a campfire (or a barbecue, if you’re not yet a fully-qualified wilderness type). There is, of course, no shame in nipping over to the pub instead, or supplementing your roots and berries with some sausages from the shops, all a short drive away in Bishop’s Stortford. While you’re touring away from Toad Abode, make time to see Pishiobury Park (20 minutes), originally a landscaped garden designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century and now a designated County Wildlife Site. With grazing pastures occupied by a friendly herd of longhorn cattle, wet woodlands and flood meadows, it's a fine example of nature improving on the works of humans.

Local attractions

To see more of that human-nature fusion at work, take a 10-minute trip to the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, where the renowned sculptor lived for 40 years. Indoors, tours of Moore’s home and book collection give an insight into the artist’s private life while his studio and the gardens outside show how sketches became models and finally monumental works. There are a great many more homes to poke round in this part of Hertfordshire, from opulent Audley End to the downright fanciful Knebworth House, whose oriental domes and spires are now home to a dinosaur trail and adventure playground (both 40 minutes). Smaller members of the party may also appreciate a trip to Mountfitchet Castle, its restored Norman village, nearby toy museum and most especially its tales of ghosts and torture chambers (20 minutes). You might get want get back to the safety of the wild after all that, in which case, ancient Hatfield Forest (30 minutes) should oblige, with a lake for fishing and boating, trails for walking and cycling and a café with tea and cake. Enroute, look out for fallow and muntjac deer, buzzards, green woodpeckers and cormorants.
