  • A 25-minute drive from Abergavenny and 35 minutes from Hay-on-Wye
  • Bespoke wetrooms with private toilets and showers; pub 15 mins' walk
Picture the scene: it’s day one of your hols, you wake to the sounds of birdcalls, you sneak a peek outside and there, in all their glory, are the Black Mountains. If this sounds just splendid (because you're a sensible sort), head along to Cayo Retreat, a family-friendly site in Herefordshire, 25 minutes’ drive from Abergavenny. On a working farm, this site is the epitome of peaceful: five minutes up a small country road from the nearest habitation, there’s no foot traffic (or regular traffic) passing by to break the quiet, and wanders with your dog through woodland and along the banks of the private stretch of river running through the site should soothe troubled minds (and energetic mutts) right quick. Lengthier rambles are within easy reach too, as the Black Mountains – and the Brecon Beacons National Park, and the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path – are on the England-Wales border less than a mile’s saunter away across fields. When it comes to eats, the perennially hungry are well catered for: the pretty little village of Longtown is a 15-minute walk from base for a small well-stocked shop and a local pub serving food. There are bespoke wet rooms with private toilets and showers on site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: John was very kind to wait for us to arrive, despite us getting lost and arriving over an hour late! Field was soft, well tended and clean. Large plots clearly marked, and very well lit. Facilities were good, with space to wash up, as well as a really nice shower/toilet block (soap and hand towel included).

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Great view of the backdrop of hills, clean and quiet (except for one escapee sheep early in the morning!). Large campfire lit in the evening for a communal gathering. Stream nearby with a fun swing rope. Very flat so easy to camp or park up the van. Showers were super hot.

Disliked: Bit pricey for just one person. Only one washing up sink, and toilets wash basin and showers were in one cubicle (only 2 per male/female), so can't imagine how it works when busy (I came when there was just a handful of campers so had no really issues).

Primitive grass trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautifully presented area for camping, neatly cut grass with a hardcore drive lined with solar lights. There were four cubicles that contained a shower, toilet and basin. All well presented, clean and a good size. To the side of the shower block was a kitchen sink. The water in both the shower and kitchen sink was piping hot and had good water pressure. Our host, John, was very friendly and welcoming. There is a local shop and pub a short walk away. The village store, Hopes of Longtown, had a great selection of items and stocked lots of key items for camping, so you are sorted if you forget something.

Disliked: Really struggling to find anything to dislike but maybe a suggestion for a small improvement. There were a lot of bins around the site, however when we left they were all full, so rubbish was sitting in bags around the bins. Maybe a few more bins or bigger bins, seems a shame to see litter in such a beautiful location. Note we were there on a bank holiday weekend so probably one of the busiest times.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: The setting amongst beautiful scenery, the lack of any road noise, the immaculate grounds, generous pitches and lovely atmosphere created by John, a super-friendly, warm & welcoming host. We also loved the little homely touches in the bathrooms and the fairy lights in the evening.

Primitive grass campsite (large, mountain view, riverside)

Liked: Firstly, as many have mentioned, John the host. A bright, bubbly, chatty man who becomes everyone’s best friend. A real host and what makes the place so great from the start. Visited on the busiest weekend of the year but field never felt crowded. Great base for hiking or visiting local towns. Bit of a trek to get to from the main road but that’s the price of the peaceful surroundings. On the whole a well kept flat site.

Disliked: The ‘wet room/toilet’ facilities seemed great but need some work. Floors slope the wrong way so you sometimes find yourself sloping out someone else’s used shower water before you step in! Busy weekend so long queues to use facilities which got dirty quickly and ran out of toilet paper frequently. Could do with more and have separate toilets. Perhaps invest in a more substantial modern brick built shower block rather than a converted trailer?

Primitive grass campsite (large, mountain view, riverside)

Liked: On arrival your greeted with a spectacular view of the surrounding hills and a perfectly maintained campsite. John the owner, greeted us with the warmest of welcomes and couldn't do more for us throughout or stay. The pitch we were given was perfect with views of the hills and sounds of the river. Level pitch, bowling green lawns and great toilet facilities. Allowed to stay on site until we were ready to leave which is a first for me in the UK. One of the best and most peaceful campsites we've ever stayed at, Can't wait to return!!

Local attractions

The site’s not just well set up for ramblers… Other energetic types will be best pleased by how close National Cycle Route 42 is (just a 15-minute drive, or 30-minute cycle), and those who like to get up close with the local(ish) wildlife have only a 15-minute drive to source llama trekking. People craving high-octane adventures can opt instead for the mountain adventure centre 10 minutes away, which covers lots of different bases: guests can get competitive on the paintball field, get adrenaline pumping on the quads, hovercrafts or rally karts, test mettle on the assault course or try out marksmanship with some clay pigeon shooting. Anyone after a more laidback hol should maybe follow in historical footsteps instead: get a feel for the industry of this part of the UK at Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit National Coal Museums, both about 40 minutes away, or mosey around the ruins at Skenfrith Castle 35 minutes from base. Prefer some urban days? Head to Abergavenny – known hereabouts as a ‘gateway to Wales’ – 25 minutes from the site for indie shops and foodie stops, or Hay-on-Wye 35 minutes away for leafing through nearly two dozen bookshops.
