  • Luxury vintage bus 15 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye in Herefordshire
  • Brecon Beacons National Park 15 minutes’ drive’; boat hire 20 minutes
  • Private roll-top bath and a woodfired hot tub in the vibrant garden
Like an unusual – but uber-comfy – glamping vibe? Make a beeline for The Majestic Bus, 15 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye in Herefordshire. This vintage 1968 Bedford bus is shaded under trees and sits among a riot of vibrant flowers in its own private garden; on site you have sweeping views over the countryside to the hills that mark the Welsh border. With a stylish and colourful decor, the bus has a wooden floor, painted pine boarding and a well-thought-out dining/kitchen area with hand-built units, oak worktops, a gas cooker and a fridge. At the back is a cosy double bed and a woodburning stove sitting on an up-cycled flagstone. An L-shaped sofa folds into a further double bed. Solar panels on the roof power the lights and a socket to charge phones, laptops and other devices. A few steps away is a purpose-built wooden bathroom in the Dutch barn, where the star of the show is a luxurious roll-top bath. You can keep cosy on chillier days thanks to a woodburner, and the whole room is lit by tea lights for the ultimate in romantic bath-time experiences. Outside, your private space encompasses covered decking on two levels, a firepit for alfresco cooking and a smart woodfired Swedish hot tub with room for up to five people. From here, you can gaze up at the stars and share your nights with bats and owls.

Local attractions

First stop for sporty types will most likely be Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (formerly the Brecon Beacons, 15 minutes’ drive) for adventures on foot among wind-sculpted hills and wild moorland. Popular hikes include Pen y Fan (45 minutes), topped by a Bronze Age burial chamber, and the spectacular riverside trails in Waterfall Country (about an hour). Another hiking option is the well-trodden Offa’s Dyke Path, just 20 minutes’ walk from The Majestic Bus across several fields. If you’d rather explore on two wheels, cycle rides include a demanding loop between Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny (around six hours in the saddle). You can also explore the area on horseback (40 minutes’ drive), or get out on the water by kayaking down the River Wye (boat hire is 20 minutes away in Glasbury). Hay-on-Wye (15 minutes) may be world-known as the ‘town of books’ with its famed literary festival in early June, but it’s a lively little spot all year around. There’s a schedule of classical concerts, a buzzy Thursday market and lots of galleries to browse as well as all the bookshops. Hay Castle also does its bit with concerts and exhibitions, and there are loads of pubs and cafés for relaxing after an day of culture.
