Planning adventures on your hols? A fab idea. Staying somewhere that will sort all the necessaries for you? Doubly fab. Coming back to a cosy, comfy place for a peaceful night’s slumber? Well now, that's rather fab too. Both the adventures and the subsequent sleeps are sorted by the folk at Tipi Adventure, a glamping site by the river in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Ross-on-Wye. Let the team here know in advance how you'd like to spend your Herefordshire days and they’ll happily hook you up withe the likes of kayaking, climbing, paddleboarding, gorge scrambling, bushcraft days, raft building… Sound tiring? Quite possibly. So it’s mighty handy that you’ll have to expend very little effort back at base, for your digs will be waiting with bed linen, fur throws to cuddle up in and a generous pile of kitchen kit to cook with. Picnic tables and firepits are provided too, with removable grills for barbecuing and a supply of firewood and charcoal to get the party started (and more available to buy on site). All that remains is for you to bring along the beers and burgers, sourcing supplies at the supermarket in town or the farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away. Showers, toilets and drinking water are a short walk away. Groups of friends, stag parties and hen parties are welcome to book multiple units here.

Local attractions

Cram your days full of adrenaline-fuelled adventures if you wish, but it's highly possible you'll need a little breather now and then: a good place to start is Goodrich Castle, a well-preserved medieval number a five-minute drive or 40-minute walk away. Checking out the pretty flutterers at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (five minutes' drive) is a good way to spend a laidback couple of hours, as is watching the rather grander flying displays at the International Centre for Birds of Prey (20 minutes). Tintern Abbey and Clearwell Caves (both 25 minutes) are good additions to the schedule too. If you’d rather keep the activity going but at a gentler pace, take a walk on one of the trails within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or make your way to the local cycle centre (15 minutes' drive), to hire bikes to take out on 11 miles of traffic-free Forest of Dean trail. Segway tours and a Go Ape adventure park are in the forest too, 20 minutes’ drive away.
