  • Riverside inn on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Nine miles from Hay-on-Wye
  • Dozens of walks starting straight from the site
A riverside inn, at the bottom of the Black Mountains, and flanked by the Brecon Beacons National Park: you might reckon there's an excellent amount of hiking and biking around Herefordshire site Bridge Inn Camping Site. You'd be entirely correct – and as it's based at a pub, refreshments after a hearty hike/bike ride will be a fine option too. And if you don't want to hike or bike? First of all, pfffft, as this is a smashing countryside setting for both, but if your tastes do tend towards the more placid while on hol, the book-heavy town of Hay-on-Wye is a mere nine miles away for picking up many (many) volumes; and for sightseeing, cathedral city Hereford is around 15 miles from the pub. The drinks and food at the Bridge Inn have been lauded by many traveller types, so if you're a carnivore, do tuck into their well-regarded juicy steaks… The team's pretty knowledgeable about what's on offer hikewise around the area too: check out the dozens of local walks in the pub folder to plot where you'll be off to next. The pub provides an off-grid experience rather than a fully functioning campsite; there are pub toilets available 24/7 but there are no showers on site.

Liked: We tend to use campsites as somewhere to sleep at the end of a day, like someone else on here there seemed to be an issue with them not having our booking but as the site wasn't full it wasn't an issue. Our pitch was reasonably level and overlooked the river that gives the Pub its name. They had live music on but we were already in bed, it didn't seem overly loud to me and certainly didn't disturb my sleep and we were in the closed pitch to the pub. The hosts were very welcoming and they had a nice selection of real ales on tap which was great, we ate and drank in the pub and was surprised at how low the bill was and had to double check it for mistakes but it was right. In the morning while packing up the quiet was lovely, just the sounds of the birds and river, I would certainly stay there again. We are self contained in our van so can't comment on the showers but the toilets were clean. On the campsite phone reception and wifi is none existent, didn't bother us but its the nature of the location. If I'm in the area again it would certainly be somewhere I'd stay again.

Liked: The welcome we received when we arrived was fantastic from the hosts. We were shown where we could pitch and nothing was too much trouble. We had a meal in the pub on the Friday night when we arrived and the delicious home cooked food was fantastic. It was so good we ate again on the Saturday night, we couldn't fault it. The showers were amazing, best we think we've ever had at a campsite, so hot and great pressure. The Saturday night in the pub, there was Karaoke and we were just made to feel totally involved, the locals also really warm and welcoming. Can't wait to come back and visit again in the summer! The location is very pretty and the old building very cute, with the log burner adding to the atmosphere.

Liked: Quietness of the site and friendliness of the hosts. No wifi good and bad?

Disliked: Our Pitchup booking hasn’t been received by the hosts. They managed to squeeze in but had to share electric with another booking. Couldn’t use kettle. Bins needed emptying!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Hosts were very nice and friendly. Pub atmosphere was good and food was excellent.

Disliked: No so much disliked but I wouldn’t want to camp or rely on facilities in peak season. Only a couple of showers and sinks. Stack of white towels and hotel toiletries. Bizarre for a mixed campsite. WiFi limited to pub but not a major issue.

Local attractions

Walks, walks and yet more English and Welsh walks… dozens to pick from start straight from the pub, like the handsome route to Hay-on-Wye nine miles away, to have a wander around the bookshops before tottering back with to base with a rucksack full of reading material. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park, both edging the site, also have enough hikes of all lengths to keep you out of mischief for weeks. Abergavenny, the Monmouthshire town promoted as one of the 'gateway to Wales', is 10 miles from Bridge Inn Camping Site and has many more hiking options as the Marches Way, Beacons Way and Usk Valley Walk all pass through it (if these just aren't enough walking for you, the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path is nearby). Abergavenny dates back to Roman times and has many old buildings and ruins to see; for more ancientness, county capital Hereford is 15 miles from the pub and has a fine 11th-century cathedral, home to the splendidly eccentric medieval depiction of the world in the Mappa Mundi.
