Local attractions

The market town of Tewkesbury (five minutes’ drive) has plenty of antique shops to potter around, peaceful walks alongside the rivers Severn and Avon, and a magnificent abbey known for its colourful stained-glass windows. For more architectural grandeur, head to Gloucester Cathedral (25 minutes) to tour the ornate vaulted nave, climb the tower and admire the 15th-century library. Committed history devotees can also stroll the formal gardens and see royal tombs of Sudeley Castle (35 minutes), or spot the ornate mosaic flooring at Spoonley Wood Roman Villa (40 minutes) – be prepared for a walk through woodland to find it though. Coming a little further up to date, the Jet Age Museum (20 minutes) has displays of vintage aircraft and cockpit tours – a handy place if you need a rainy-day activity. When you’d rather be doing your exploring on foot or by bike, follow sections of the long-distance Cotswolds Way to follies like Broadway Tower (35 minutes), or climb up Cleeve Hill (25 minutes) for views to the Malverns and right into Wales.
