  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 14 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club
Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK. Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip. The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape. The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways. Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time for your review. However your score of 4/10 is the lowest we have ever received and therefore needs a response. You informed us that this was a repeat visit. If that was true then the facilities offered now would have improved since that visit! Location 2/5 - presumably you took note of where we are when booking and if you had been before our location is the same? We are a convenient 5 minutes from M1 Junction 25 located in the affluent award winning village of Stanton by Dale. Perfect location! Value for Money 1/5 - in keeping with other Touring Sites similar to us our pricing structure for a nights stay is reasonable and very often better value than others. You know the rate when you book so if you think it’s expensive why book? Accommodation 3/5 - this section on Pitchup is for people staying in log cabins/ pods etc. Therefore in your case your accommodation was your own camper van so if you mark your own 3/5 I suggest you upgrade to something better! Facilities/Activities 1/5 - we don’t claim that we offer activities and every facility we offer can be viewed at the time of booking! Customer Service 1/5 - in this context I’m not really sure this is relevant? I do know you would have been greeted and made aware of everything you needed to know. Sue engaged with you in conversation at the time she was exercising “Ken” her Harris Hawk. You witnessed a beautiful thing asking questions at the time which Sue was happy to answer and explain. That to me would be customer service above and beyond! Cleanliness 3/5 - quite frankly an insult. You will not find anywhere that comes remotely close to other sites that offer such cleanliness and attention to detail as we do. That includes the site itself and the pub! Wi Fi - 1/5 - we don’t offer Wi Fi. In the welcome letter we send you it specifically states we do not offer it and therefore if you feel this is something important to you then you might want to consider changing you booking. So in conclusion the only thing we can assume is that you did not like the fact that you where unable to get food in the pub ( The Chequers Inn) hence your sarcastic comment “convenient for The Stanhope Arms”. This review is for the Touring Site and nothing to do with the pub and again the information you receive when making a booking clearly points out all the information for food and operational hours. You’ve indicated that you wouldn’t recommend friends nor would you visit again! Let me assure you we wouldn’t let you and we don’t want vindictive people like you anyway! Pathetic!

Will definitely use again Lovely site

Liked: The site was well organised, clean and tidy. Very spacious and plenty of room on each pitch. The location is within a lovely little village and the pub on site is very good.

Disliked: The pitches are covered in wood chipping’s which get everywhere. The toilet disposal is an above ground septic tank sited in the pub car park with no water to wash or rinse unless you couple up the hose from the drinking water stand which is within the camp site.

Liked: Situated in an attractive village setting behind the Chequers inn. Electric hook up and grey waste on each pitch. 24 hour access to clean and warm toilet facilities in the pub but no shower. Easy access to the Stanhope pub in the village (The Chequers does not do food on Monday or Tuesday nor the Stanhope on Monday so Cadac at the ready for those days). Food in both pubs excellent, dog friendly and reasonably priced. Access to Irondale from junction 25 of the M1 is under 5 miles with no narrow lanes. The entrance to the site is narrow and I did have concerns before our visit having a wide caravan ( 8ft ). Don’t worry to is plenty wide enough just take it slow. Just one word of advice! After your left turn onto Dale road it is only a short distance to the entrance on the right and you could easily overshoot and there is nowhere to turn anytime soon. Ian and Sue the owners very hospitable. Would recommend and will return.

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: The whole weekend was fab! Nice quiet site, lots of walking trails around. Staff and locals in the chequers inn were very welcoming and friendly! Would definitely return. Marked 1 for child friendliness due to the fact it was adult only! No complaints as it was lovely and quiet! Wifi available in the pub but wouldn't reach to the site.

Disliked: The only downside would be that there are no showers on site. Toilets are in the pub but are accessible 24hrs a day.

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology. Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.) Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).
