  • Grass pitches on a farm overlooking Arnfield Reservoir, Derbyshire
  • On the Trans Pennine Trail and 10 minutes’ drive from the Pennine Way
  • Walking and cycling accessible from the site, pubs and shops nearby
Crossgate Farm Campsite is a pop-up affair on a working farm with views over Arnfield Reservoir and Longdendale valley in Tintwistle, Derbyshire. This is a smashing place for walkers and bikers, as guests have direct access to the Trans Pennine Trail, the Pennine Bridleway and Pennine Cycleway Route 68 from the site – and pick up from public transport can be arranged so you don’t need to worry about bringing the car. There’s cycle hire in Hadfield (five minutes’ drive) too, and if you’re just not that into the long-distance, serious stuff, you can still get plenty of bracing Derbyshire air fishing at the reservoir (five minutes’ walk), practising your swing on 18-hole golf courses (20 minutes) and exploring Pennine trails on horseback (15 minutes). Birdwatchers might get lucky and see curlews and red grouse flitting around the water at RSPB Dove Stone (30 minutes), or waders and swallows (surprise) in Swallows Wood (five minutes), on the site of a former reservoir. Barbecues are permitted on the camping field, and the village of Hollingworth (five minutes) has several handy shops as well as a couple of pubs and takeaways for those days when you don’t feel like cooking. You can bring dogs on your Derbyshire farm stay too, but please keep them on a lead around the cattle.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Staff are friendly and there's a nice little cafe on site.

Disliked: You can hear the buzz of the local town from the campsite and the slop of the field isn't the best. Despite stating £1 for a shower this still isn't available although I was offered the ability to shower in the house if I choose.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location,

Disliked: No shower even thou advertised Portaloo not cleaned and full to the top with fieces.

From the manager: Hi Paul, Showers were always available in the house if you asked, while the campsite showers were being installed. The campsite showers are now live and working below the cafe building. The toilets were an issue the weekend of the 11th and 12th of May when you stayed, the company had not been out to them because of the bank holiday without telling me that would be the case. As you are aware we allowed all campers to use the house toilets and put up signs to that effect. We have since changed the portaloo provider as we were not happy with their service.

Loved the barn cafe/bar area. Friendly welcoming staff.…
