  • Peaceful wild camping a five-minute drive from Tideswell, Derbyshire
  • Chatsworth House 20 minutes’ drive; Sheffield 45 minutes
  • Adults only; in Peak District National Park; pub within half-hour walk
If you’ve been spending too much time stressing in front of a computer, you might well be in need of a break from all modern trappings. Cue Stanley Lodge Farm, a tiny wild-camping site on a family smallholding in the Derbyshire countryside, a five-minute drive from the village of Tideswell. What makes this spot so suited to anyone in need of rest and relaxation? Well, it’s an adults-only site, for starters, which means zero chance of being stirred from your slumber by screaming children. Dogs are not allowed, either, so no barking wake-up calls; and guests are kindly requested not to play loud music. These are all pretty good credentials for a peaceful break, you’ll no doubt agree… A path runs right past the site, so you can explore the immediate surroundings on foot, perhaps heading to Eyam (about one hour’s walk), a small village with a museum, a craft centre and a sculpture garden. There are a couple of pubs within a half-hour walk, in case you get parched on your hike. And of course, you’re right in the middle of Peak District National Park here, with its hilly hikes, caverns and reservoirs. There is a unisex portable toilet on site and a drinking water tap, but not much else. Well… there are resident horses, but please resist the temptation to share your carrots with them – they are not to be fed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Me and my friends enjoyed the views and the quiet little plot of land. Perfect amount of space, portable toilet on site as-well. Good value for money and easy to find!

Disliked There’s nothing really to dislike but if i had to say one thing is that there’s nothing really in walking distance around the area but that’s nothing to do with the owners of the campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great little campsite, very small which I liked. Only 4 tents in total and was very peaceful. You can really enjoy a peaceful night here listening to nature and watching cars in the distance.

Disliked Site is a bit lumpy in places but if you shift around you can get comfy.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great views. Easy to find. Well maintained. Very tidy. Mostly level. Adults only so nice and quiet.
The Three Stags Head pub is fantastic and a proper step back in time. 10 mins walk across the field.

Disliked Some areas of the field were rather lumpy; I suspect it's the result of having their horses graze the field during the off season.
Being high up on a moor, the site can be rather windy at times. Ensure you pitch your tent properly else it may end up in the next field.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Small site, pitch where you want, plenty of space around you. Could watch the sun set in our car next to our tent as it was too cold and windy to sit outside. Informed before arrival that we could choose where to pitch tent and where the amenities were.

Disliked Nothing

Local attractions

A stone building on the edge of the village of Eyam houses the Eyam Museum (10 minutes’ drive), which illustrates how the local community managed to contain an outbreak of the plague in 1665 by self-isolating. Displays also include minerals, locally unearthed fragments of Roman pottery and mining artefacts. The opulent Painted Hall at Chatsworth House (20 minutes) impresses with its chequered marble floor, splendidly colourful ceiling and gilded balconies. Other highlights at this 17th-century stately home include an oak-panelled room, plus a garden with statuary and water features. Head into Sheffield (45 minutes) to learn all there is to know about the local steel industry at the Kelham Island Museum, on the River Don. There are more steel exhibits at the Millennium Gallery, or you might decide to catch a snooker championship game at the Crucible Theatre (or a show, if snooker’s not on).
