  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Miller's Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and coin-operated showers for guests’ use (the showers require £1 coins, so please bring them with you). There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

What customers say

This working farm campsite boasts stunning Peak District views and a welcoming vibe. Guests rave about the helpful staff, the on-site cafe/bar/farm shop, and its prime location for hikes. While facilities are typically fine and clean, some noted they can get crowded. Upgrades to washrooms are planned. Events and live music are a hit, though a few found them a bit noisy.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Beautiful views, loved the swallows and other birds.

Disliked Leaking toilets, partying campers, dogs not on leads as required. Long way from far end of field to all the facilities. Toilets etc were all portacabins, and washing up area pretty basic - but worked OK. Surfacing of steep approach was terribly potholed.

Great facilities and location, but noise and poor service spoiled it.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful location with lovely views.
Close to the Monsal Trail and several good pubs.
Clean and well-maintained toilet and washing facilities.
The café, food and farm shop were all good, with reasonable prices.
Overall, the site has good facilities and is in a great area for exploring.

Disliked Unfortunately, several issues during our stay left us disappointed. Despite the site rules stating quiet hours, no vehicle movement after 9pm, and restrictions on large groups, these rules did not appear to be enforced. There were several large groups on site, people smoking cannabis, frequent vehicle movements late into the evening, and considerable noise.

The biggest issue came on Saturday night when the campsite hosted a 70s/80s disco in the café. While some guests may have enjoyed this, it went on late into the evening and significantly disrupted our sleep before an early start on Sunday morning. We chose this campsite expecting a peaceful environment, so this was particularly frustrating.

We were also disappointed by an interaction with staff in the farm shop. There are signs in the café instructing guests to ask in the shop if they wish to charge their phones. My husband politely did exactly that, explaining that we simply wanted to charge our phones while we ate dinner. The response from a tall woman with short hair was unexpectedly rude and accusatory. During the conversation, an older man approached, stood very close to my husband, and asked if there was a problem in a manner that felt intimidating. Once my husband calmly explained the situation, the man backed off and simply stated that they could not accept liability for the phones before walking away.

It's a shame because the location, facilities and amenities have a lot going for them. However, the lack of enforcement of site rules, the late-night disco, and the poor customer service experience on Saturday left a sour taste in our mouths. As a result, despite the positives, we won't be returning.

Liked Everything is great, the location main hiking routes are just around the corner. Buxton is 12min drive or there is a direct bus too. Food and general facilities are great, you have bar for the evening with some music and entertainment. It’s just perfect!

Disliked Nothing :)

Liked Good location and nice viewd

Disliked Expensive shop. Told we couldn't get dinner on arrival due to a wedding party that evening.
Large parties of adults shouting, singing and playing loud music until 2am.
Put me off going back I'm afraid

From the manager: Hi Mark,

Thanks for your review, although I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with your stay. We do hold events throughout the season, and we make every effort to advertise any changes to opening times that these might effect. There are also a few other pubs / places to get food within around a 10 minute walk which we would have been happy to direct you to as an alternative.

I am sorry to hear that you experienced some disruptions, on the welcome sheet provided to you at check in, there is a phone number provided for you to specifically report any issues on site, which we would then have dealt with at the time. Unfortunately, no such issues were reported at the time.

Thanks again for your views, although I am sorry that they may have been avoidable if mentioned while you were on site.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Miller's Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
