  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and coin-operated showers for guests’ use (the showers require £1 coins, so please bring them with you). There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked I love everything about this place great walks lovely scenery and having the cow shead on site makes it even better. All the staff are really nice and welcoming. Nice pint at the bar and we had breakfast before we left and it was really good quality. I’ve seen the site in the summer and now the winter and I’ve loved both my stays here and will definitely be back a few times this year.

Disliked Showers weren’t working but it wasn’t an issue as we were only there for one night and staff told us when we got there.

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked Easy to find

Disliked No evening entertainment as advertised, clubhouse/restaurant was shut by 19:00 even though told by staff and sign on the door it was open till 20:00. Came back from being out to find no way of getting out evening meal. Advised the showers may not work due to weather, still took our money but the timer didn’t go down on the shower or have any water come out. In my opinion this means they are broken and not down to weather as hot water taps work for the toilets but no shower

From the manager: Hi there,

Thank you for your comments, and I apologise that you were not happy with our services.

Our evening entertainment runs seasonally, and generally only at weekends, to fit with the busier periods on the campsite. I feel with the word 'clubhouse', you may have an idea of us as a Butlins holiday park - we are a rural campsite which runs gigs in the summer as an extra.

Our opening hours are displayed as variable during the quieter seasons, again as demand ebbs and flows, and our staff take some necessary time off. If you had let us know you had plans to dine later, we would have stayed open for you.

On the showers, these are automatic and the pumps can easily freeze over the winter months in the Peak District, hence the reason we give notice. From your description, it sounds like you were forewarned about the issues and their cause but still surprised when these events played out.

In future I would encourage you to ask us any questions while on site so that we can address your problems at the time, which we are always happy to do.

Many thanks,
Thomas

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked The girl who worked at reception was very helpful and pleasant. views from the campsite were quite nice, especially during sunrise.

Disliked Short version:
Friendly staff, unpleasant owner, wouldn't recommend giving them business.

Detailed version:
The listing states that between January and April, shower use is not guaranteed, which implies that at other times showers are guaranteed. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case during our stay. We booked from the 23rd–25th of December and were informed on arrival that the showers were not available.

We decided to stay for one night and checked out early on the morning of the 24th. When we politely asked for a refund for the remaining night, the girl who worked on reception, who was very pleasant and helpful—asked the owner if this was possible. The owner outright refused, did not engage in any conversation with us, and simply shook his head repeating: "no" and walked past as if he couldn’t care less.

Problems can happen, and that’s understandable, but the owner’s dismissive attitude toward a reasonable and polite request for a refund due to unforeseen shower issues was frustrating. If no issues arise, I’m sure a good time can be had at this site. However, if problems do occur, it’s highly unlikely the owner is capable of handling them in a friendly or reasonable manner. For this reason, I can’t recommend this campsite.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Good location in proximity to Peak District- Bakewell/Matlock.

Cosy but enough space for a couple and a dog.

Glasses, crockery, hop provided.
Sponge and washing up liquid also provided.

Cute bar/cafe/shop on site.

Toilets very close and clean.

Disliked The lamp was very dim and needed our phone torch to see anything. Asked and got some more batteries eventually but still quite dark.
The heater is on an ethanol burner but need at least 2 bottles (which they provide but asked for the second). Therefore, a little chilly in the morning, but blankets on top of duvet provided. This would not be an issue in the summer.

I would bring a bin bag for rubbish.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
