  • Flat, grassy and dog-friendly park opposite Shining Cliff Woods
  • A 10-min drive to Belper and 30 from the Peak District National Park
  • Firepits for hire and local pubs within a mile of the site
Set your sights towards Tannenbaum Campsite for a high chance of a top time in the Derbyshire countryside – this flat, grassy and dog-friendly park is opposite the Higg Lane entrance of Shining Cliff Woods. This spot on the outskirts of the village of Alderwasley makes a grand base for walking, cycling and generally exploring the Peak District National Park a half-hour drive away. If you’re one for aquatic activities, you may be pleased to see that Carsington Water is a 20-minute drive away, for kayaking, sailing, fly fishing and standup paddleboarding. Along the banks, birdwatching, biking and bumbling about are welcome as well. Also nearby is the Crich Tramway Village at under 15 minutes’ drive away; visit here to see around 60 trams created between 1873 and 1982 sitting in a period-style settlement with an old-school pub, café, sweetshop and tram depots. Head back to the site via Wirksworth to do the big supermarket shop, then borrow one of Tannenbaum's firepits for extra warmth while stoking up the barbecue to prep fare. Alternatively, time it just right to drop by Belper (under 10 minutes) for the monthly farmers’ market; you can also have a classic tearoom treat in this town, try one of the modern restaurants or catch a flick in the small cinema. Other spots for seeking sustenance include local pubs within a mile of the site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We wanted a 'proper' camping experience, and thats exactly what we got. Yes there are amenities like hot showers, toilets, coffee van, and bar! (Adults need some respite) but in regards to the pitch and location, you can't get a more beautifully isolated feeling. Views out down to the valley, wild long grass juxtaposed next to your manicured camping pitch. Kids can play in the centre field all day long, surrounded by a natural long grass enclosure nonstop them wondering into others pitches! Just a perfect set up

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This is a lovely campsite with a getting away from it all feel while being close to amenities. The location is excellent with Shining Cliff woods just around the corner. Owner was very friendly and accommodating. Beautiful views.

Disliked: No rubbish disposal on site so had to take all our rubbish with us (in very full cars on a very hot day).

Local attractions

Got mini members of the family on hol with you? Gear them up for a good time at Gulliver's Kingdom (15 minutes’ drive away), an amusement park for three to 13 year olds with roller coasters, tower rides and a log flume. This action-packed place also has a Jurassic-themed area with animatronic dinosaurs catering to palaeontologists in the making. Picnics are allowed at Gulliver's and a few fast food restaurants are dotted around among the dodgems, ball pit and Princess Play Area as well. And if the teens are in tow? Promise them a trip taking on the thrills of the Nemesis and Oblivion coasters at Alton Towers 45 minutes away. Small fry also love flying above the scenery on the cable car in Matlock Bath towards the Heights of Abraham, a park on top of Masson Hill where a little learning’s added into the mix thanks to cave and mine tours.
