  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Chatsworth House and Haddon House both 20 minutes’ drive
  • Ice cream sold on site; access to Lathkill Dale via the camping fields
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm.

Power optional gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: The proximity to Bakewell and local scenery. Friendliness of site owner.

Disliked: The lack of facilities for so many people. 4 full fields with 4 showers! 2 toilet blocks but the newer one was out of use twice in a 2-day stay due to blocking and flushes not working. The shower block is very old and not cleaned. Everywhere felt dirty. The family shower room was an absolute disgrace. Filthy, no chairs, shower with no curtain stuck in the middle of the room. Very dated and not cared for. Pointless as it offers nothing to help families. It was also a very long way from the pitches to the facilities. 11 o clock rule not enforced and same sex groups and young groups allowed.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Although it was very popular (a weekend in June!) there was still plenty of space to choose from and the people running it were really friendly and helpful. Nice touch having someone cooking fresh pizzas! I am a lone female with my dog and felt completely safe whilst there and the facilities were good.

Disliked: The only slight annoyance were the people playing their music loud and attempting to sing…. But they only did that until midnight, I just wish the singing was in tune, although I can’t say much as tone deaf myself!

Liked: We loved the cite. It was full of animals and friendly staff, lots of spaces to set up out tents. And lots of help with all our needs. The bathrooms were stunning and clean.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The kids loved the baby cows and kittens, the ice cream sold at the little shop was excellent, very friendly and helpful campsite owners. Toilets were always clean or being cleaned. Rope swings were a big hit. Beautiful views, great walk to the little waterfall.

Disliked: Only very minor gripe was the shop could be a little bit more well stocked but our own fault for not bringing beer with us! X

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Views are great with plenty of space and different areas to pitch up. Pizza tent on the Saturday night was an added bonus, and the pizza was lovely (we pre-ordered by texting the pizza guy). Location is good for walkers.

Disliked: Large groups, and very busy which made it noisey at times, great if you like that, but we like the more relaxed, chilled vibe. Music being played till 1am, despite one of the sites policy's being no noise after 11pm. Toilet and shower facilities were adequate, but nowhere near enough for the amount of people that vist at busy times (lots of queuing), and no equipment to help with keeping tidy. The new toilet block was lovely (but still insufficient numbers) when clean and not blocked! Had to clear the blockage made by others before I could use it.

For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
