Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Haddon Grove is a lovely campsite in the Peak District - the views of the dale are great, there are footpaths accessible directly from the site and Bakewell is only a short drive away. The fields are well maintained with flat grass pitches, plenty of shelter around the edge of the fields and hardcore tracks to access the different fields. The facilities are basic and clean, the washing up area is under cover - we stayed on a very busy weekend and both toilet blocks were clean and had soap and loo roll, but the water pressure was a bit low and not reliably hot. We hired a fire pit and bought a bag of logs; the little shop is a nice touch - we were able to buy some butter on site, which I forgot to pack! The swings around the site were a huge hit and we had tears last night because we don’t have a rope swing at home!

Disliked: This site is big and was busy the weekend we stayed - we arrived quite late (7.30pm) and it took a little while to find somewhere to pitch up. It clearly states the number of pitches on the booking page though and is a bigger site than I would usually choose. The owners allow large groups to stay and there were some who were quite noisy (music and loud chat, but past the 11pm quiet time) - probably not what you’re looking for if you want a quiet stay.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location. Spacious site. Immaculate toilet blocks. Friendly people

Disliked: Nothing about the site but other campers - a volvo owner seemed to think it ok to idle the car for a couple of hours or more twice a day presumably to charge equipment.

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tours of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
