  • Peaceful adults-only farm stays in the Derbyshire Dales
  • A 10-minute drive to Ashbourne, Carsington Water and the Peak District
  • Family-run site with direct access to a public footpath
Point your compass towards the Derbyshire Dales and scoop up an adults-only stay at Offcote Grange, a well-kept family farm a couple of miles outside of the market town of Ashbourne. Tempted by the prospect of sleeping in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse? For those looking for grownup hols, there's the added bonus that there'll be no noisy kids scurrying around site. Mild mischief is laid on (quietly and at a safe distance) by Offcote Grange's cheeky donkeys, who cavort through neighbouring paddocks as the farm's herd of cattle look on. (Please note that the site is unable to accept dogs because of the livestock on site.) There’s no denying that these green Derbyshire grounds are kept in admirably good nick – while the animals graze gracefully in their field, owners Pat and Chris manually mow the grassy patches earmarked for human habitation. This tourer-friendly spot has a gated hard driveway for easy arrivals and departures, with facilities housed in a purpose-built block that has three sinks, toilets and showers (including a disabled cubicle). Several water taps are dotted around, and a handy waste disposal point is on hand should you need it. Stepping out to tour the surrounding Henmoor Valley could hardly be simpler, as there's a well-trodden footpath that passes right by the front of the farm. It's possible to traipse through the fields down to Ashbourne, but if you're planning on loading up on treats at the deli and other specialist food shops you might want to clear the car boot and drive the 10 minutes into town instead.

Liked: The site was absolutely stunning, everything was well kept and presented and the view was to die for! The toilet block was remarkably clean and my friends and I commented on how nice it smelled. The donkeys were a personal favourite for us.

Liked: An absolutely perfect site. The best we've stayed at. Pat and Chris are so friendly and helpful and their site is in the most beautiful location. The best breakfast view ever. The facilities are excellent and clean and we loved how peaceful the location is. The only sound is the occasional tawny owl at night. The star gazing is also superb. Thanks Pat and Chris, we'll be back.

Liked: Due to the recent bad weather we were unable to park our van on the grass pitch. We were offered a space on the owners private drive, which was fine for the one night we stayed. Still had electric hook-up and great views over the hills. Lovely clean shower and toilet block. Very quiet site/location. Owners are super friendly.

Disliked: Walked into Asbourne (about 1.5 miles from the campsite). Not much going on, and not many nice places to eat or drink. Ok for one night but if you are planning on staying longer maybe consider Buxton or Matlock.

Liked: Peace and tranquility with no kids or dogs. Small number of pitches and very clean, modern toilet and shower. Walkable in to Ashbourne and also a pub at Kniveton. The hosts are very helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. Really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.

Liked: The most peaceful and quiet site we have ever stayed on. Gorgeous views and grounds, the toilets and shower were spotless and of a very high quality. Pat and Chris were very friendly and welcoming. Not far at all from Ashbourne and there is a pub just over a mile away. We had a lovely time away from the kids and dog, would most definitely stay again.

Liked: If you want quiet than this is your place, so peaceful, a 10 min drive to Ashbourne if you fancy browsing in some shops, a lovely walk to red lion pub about a mile walk, shower and toilets was basic but very clean and looked after, lovely couple who run it and the grounds are very well kept on top of

Disliked: Pitch wasn’t very level , could level the van with equipment we had so was on a slight tilt

Local attractions

Keeping things local? It's a doddle to get from this well-located site to loads of nearby locales of note, whether you're keen to potter around Ashbourne's antiques shops, stride through the Derbyshire Dales or go boating on nearby Carsington Water (all 10 minutes' drive). Holidaymakers of an outdoorsy disposition are also a 10-minute drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park, a playground for walkers, pedallers and horsey folk. If you have a soft spot for stately homes, the surrounding Derbyshire countryside is also where to find cool country piles like Norbury Hall (20 minutes), Kedleston Hall (30 minutes) and Chatsworth House (45 minutes). Just because there are no kids about to egg you on, it doesn't mean you can't take advantage of this spot's proximity to Alton Towers (25 minutes) to zoom around on coasters of an afternoon. Go Ape Buxton (30 minutes) is also within reach if you have a head for heights but don't fancy queuing up to get your adrenaline fix.
