  • Peaceful five-acre farm meadow on the edge of Thornton village
  • Bletchley Park 20 minutes’ drive; Oxford 45 minutes
  • Pet-friendly; a few minutes’ walk from the River Great Ouse
Fancy a break within a splendid rural landscape, down by the riverside? (Right by the River Great Ouse, to be precise.) Then, Riverside Camping might be the site for you. This family-oriented spot on a working farm sits between Buckingham (10 minutes’ drive) and Milton Keynes (15 minutes), on the edge of the village of Thornton, a few minutes’ walk from the gorgeous Ouse Valley Way. With five acres of meadow to pitch up and relax in, it’s also an uncrowded spot. Amenities are simple, but they include basics like access to a hot shower and a flushing toilet (additional portable toilets are brought in for busy weekends). Handily for tourers, the site also has capacity to deal with waste from caravans. Kids and pets are welcome, and there are plenty of areas nearby where dogs can be walked; however, please note that this is a peaceful site: quiet hours apply between 10.30pm and 7.30am, and there should be no noise after midnight. There’s lots in the surrounding area to keep the entire family occupied: there’s Milton Keynes for bowling, indoor skiing or climbing; Hogshaw Farm & Wildlife Park (20 minutes) for animal encounters and experiences; and Silverstone (25 minutes) for speed demons. For food shops, restaurants and a farmers’ market, head into Buckingham, where other attractions include an ancient gaol and a public leisure centre. Pick up any breakfast bits while you’re in town, but no need to purchase any eggs – they get delivered to the site for guests to buy.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location for my needs (Silverstone racetrack). Nice plot, quite and excellent price! Friendly welcome and I’ll definitely come back.

Disliked: Some of the field was a little overgrown spiked weeds but honestly this didn’t bother me, it may bother others (small kids for sure) but this isn’t really a dislike, more a suggestion just to try and keep the field mowed I guess.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice site with good ground for pitching a tent, lovely owner who answered my questions promptly and friendly.

Disliked: One toilet so was busy for the site and two outdoor shower cubicles one indoor porta shower. This wasnt a huge issue but more toilets and indoor or porta showers would be better.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Three showers and one working fully flushing toilet. Large cold water sink/water point. Used two of them, one lovely warm and with hooks others were more exposed and no hooks to hang things from to keep drier. In a nice spot for what we wanted near by (within 30 mins drive) Liked the fact offered rubbish disposal area and recycling area to encourage recycling. Clean facilities and regularly kept clean and stocked with toilet paper etc.

Disliked: Only one toilet which at times meant had to queue and with small children sometimes desperate to go not ideal. Only cold water to wash dishes with. But can boil up so minor point. Only hooks on one shower for hanging towels etc from.
