It's free, quick and easy!
- Dog-friendly country setting on the bank of the South Canadian river
- A 35-minute drive to Lake Thunderbird State Park; the city further out
- ATV trails, river access for swimming or kayaking and an outdoor pub
Get cosy right on the bank of the South Canadian river in Oklahoma… whether you’re kicking back with an ice-cold beer or glass of red at the site’s outdoor grain silo pub or setting yourself up a picnic by the shore, Soggy Bottom Camping is all about the sweet, sweet times (and there’s no excluding any family members of the canine kind, since they’re also permitted to go on holiday with you).
Outdoorsy ones will be set over this 120-acre site with a country setting. There are miles upon miles of trails for ATV rides (bring your own only), four-wheeling or horseback adventures and of course, river access for those morning swims or afternoons fishing. Take a kayak out to ride the currents; when the water’s low enough, it’s possible to travel all the way to Eufaula Lake, Oklahoma.
If all of the activity has worked up your appetite, head to the food truck on site (open Friday through to Sunday) and then chill out at the outdoor grain silo pub, where the site’s clean men and women’s bathrooms are located (with running hot and cold water). With events or live music most Saturday evenings, it’s bound to be a pretty swell time.
When you’re ready to turn your attention outwards instead, the historic Railroad Bridge Road Bridge is only 10 minutes’ walk down the road. It’s the longest one-way bridge in Pottawatomie County, so you may want to snap a pic there. Pick up any supplies at the small shop in Byar, under 10 minutes’ drive away.

Route directions
From Drummond Road, there will be a turning to the right. The house of the left is a neighbouring property, so continue to drive down the drive. There will be a yellow sign for the site. Stop at the little gatehouse at the end of the drive and if no one is in, check in at the pub. If the pub isn’t occupied, use the black box to check in.

Local attractions
Continue your outdoorsy streak with a visit to The Ravine Outdoor Adventure Park (25 minutes’ drive), where a day pass will let you in on stunning hikes and mountain biking trails past ravines, canyons and other cool landscapes.
If watersports are more your thing, Lake Thunderbird State Park (35 minutes) should make it onto your to-do list too. This spectacular place has two marinas, many boat ramps and swimming spots in plenty – that’s if you’re not already captaining a kayak, canoe or other vessel.
There’s more boating and swimming on the timetable at Pauls Valley City Lake (25 minutes) on the way into Oklahoma City (an hour and five minutes). You’ll want to pay the city a visit too, especially if botanical gardens, a railway or cowboy museum, or the Frontier City (an hour and 10 minutes) theme park sound like your kind of bag.
Down south, Turner Falls Park (55 minutes) is also rather splendid. Caves, a 77-foot waterfall and many a wild swimming spot can be found in this location.
