Rustic Ridge View Farm is only 90 minutes’ drive from New York City, but it’s like being in a different world. If you’re after an outdoorsy activity-filled weekend, this horse farm in forest near Kerhonkson could be just the spot for you.
Here, you’re really out in wild backcountry. Bring your tent and sleeping bags, and set up under pine-scented spruces. Your secluded, back-to-basics campsite overlooks horses grazing on the other side of a fence, there are awesome mountain views, and if you catch the right weather, you’ll get an equally dramatic sunset too. Portable toilets are provided, but please note there’s no running water.
However and wherever you spend the day, back at your rural base camp, you can get together with other guests around the firepit and swap tales of your day’s adventures, or feel free to fend for yourself. Either way, it’s not a problem.
If you need supplies for the barbecue, there are convenience stores in Kerhonkson, and a couple of farmers’ markets offering the very best of regional produce.
Too much fresh air and too tired to cook? That’s not a problem either; head for one of the handful of laidback restaurants and takeouts within a five-minute drive.

You’ll be close to hiking routes in Minnewaska State Park Preserve (10 minutes' drive) and the Mohonk Preserve (20 minutes) while Witch’s Hole State Forest (10 minutes) also has some gentle circular trails leading to a waterfall.
If you want to up the adrenaline buzz, rock climbing and camping go hand in chalky hand. There’s cool climbing in the Shawangunk Mountains (The Gunx, 20 minutes) and at Sam’s Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve (25 minutes). And for a real step outside your comfort zone, why not fix yourself up with a parachute jump at Skydive The Ranch (30 minutes)?
If you’ve got kids along on your adventure, treat them to animal encounters at Frederick Farm Goat Rescue and Sanctuary (15 minutes), or get them up and active with paddle boat rental, archery sessions and tractor rides at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch (10 minutes).
