Local attractions

In Ljubno ob Savinji (five minutes’ drive), the Interactive Timber-Rafting Museum has displays on this centuries-old (but no longer practised) local craft – from traditional rafters’ costumes to equipment and the history of the trade. Have a go on the simulator to experience the trip rafters used to take from the Savinja Valley to the Black Sea. Keen hikers head east to Biba Planina (40 minutes’ drive), a plateau dotted with small ponds where, in the summer months, sheep, horses and cattle graze lazily in the alpine meadows. Check out the simple Kapela Sv. Antona, built of wood and stone, and wander along forested trails, taking in far-reaching views of the valley. Within the Ponikovski Kras Plateau, Pekel Cave (one hour and 15 minutes) is a large karst cavern with a terrifying reputation. ‘Pekel’ means hell, and the name is largely due to the vapours that emanate from the cave’s entrance in the winter months, when it’s warmer inside than out.
