  • Off-grid glamping in the wetlands of the Danube floodplains
  • Five minutes’ drive to Kovilj; 35 minutes to Novi Sad
  • Well-designed wooden cabins with solar power and pretty gardens
Set in the protected Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit wetlands on Serbia’s River Danube floodplain, Ritopia Glamping is a small, rural and off-grid glamping retreat near the historic village of Kovilj (five minutes’ drive). This peaceful and leafy spot is surrounded by nature and designed for guests looking for an escape from everyday bustle – it’s certainly not for you if you’re after late-night entertainment and lots of on-site activities.
True to its sustainable aims, the site runs on solar energy, so you can have a low-impact stay without compromising on comfort. Accommodation is in smart wooden cabins positioned among trees so they blend into the landscape. Interiors are minimalist yet comfortable (double beds, furniture made from natural materials and soft lighting), with a calming vibe that will soon have you nicely relaxed.
Outside every cabin is a small exclusive-use terrace and garden with views over reed beds to the waterways. The surrounding wetlands are rich in wildlife, and you can expect birdsong at sunrise, misty mornings and golden reflections at sunset on cloudless evenings. Nearby, you can sample regional food like paprika-spiced fish and pork sausages in local restaurants, or take a day trip to Novi Sad (35 minutes) to marvel at its eclectic architecture and enjoy the lively dining scene.

Local attractions

First stop on your sightseeing agenda might be the historic Serbian Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Archangels at Kovilj (five minutes’ drive). This historic complex was founded in the 13th century, and today it’s as well-known for selling home-produced honey and plum rakija (brandy) as it is for its splendid baroque-era architecture and glittering frescoes in the church. If you’re intent on picking up more local souvenirs, the shop at Grgeteg Monastery (40 minutes) sells Serbia’s sweet Bermet dessert wine. When an urban day out is called for, cultured Novi Sad (35 minutes) is a laidback city awash with a photogenic blend of baroque, neo-classical, art nouveau and Bauhaus architecture, plus a vibrant café culture that spills out onto cobbled streets and along the Danube-side promenade. Across the river, hilltop Petrovaradin Fortress (half an hour) squats behind its ramparts; today it’s the home of July’s multi-genre EXIT Festival. If you’d rather explore on foot or by pedal power, you have direct access to the Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit wetlands from the pitches for walking, cycling and kayaking adventures in the protected nature reserve. Sremski Karlovci (half an hour) is a gateway to Fruška Gora National Park, where there are numerous trails through the floodplain landscapes and Bermet vineyards open for touring and tastings.
