- Family-friendly site a five minutes’ drive from Plav, on the river Lim
- National Park Prokletije half an hour’s drive; Hrid Lake one hour
- Splendid mountain views; watersports and fishing at Plav’s Lake
Lakes and mountains (and associated pursuits) await at Plav Lake Camping, a peaceful site on the outskirts of the town of Plav (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk), in southeastern Montenegro. For an added bonus, you’re about one hour’s drive from the border of Albania and one hour and 15 minutes from Kosovo, so you can tick two more entries off the list of Balkan countries you’ve visited.
The site stretches across a green meadow on the shores of the river Lim, which flows into Plav’s Lake a short distance (less than half a kilometre) to the south. This is your friendly reminder to bring your canoe or fishing rod (if you can), or at the very least your swimsuit: the lake is a popular activity hub, with pedal boats for rent at the Splavovi Jetty (five minutes’ drive), and hikes all around.
Of course, if none of these appeals to you, you can simply roll out a towel and relax as you take in spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. (You’re on the edge of National Park Prokletije here, which you can reach within a half-hour drive.)
Back at the site, drop the kids off in the play area or the games room while you sort out your barbecue dinner (the barbecue itself is provided, and you can source all your ingredients in Plav town, where there are also several cafés and restaurants), which you can then enjoy at picnic tables dotted across the green.

Local attractions
Grebaje Valley (half an hour’s drive) is the place to visit if you fancy a little challenge in your hike. (Though of course, you can keep things simple by not straying too far from the valley floor.) This nature reserve is home to ragged peaks, the thundering Gërla waterfall and unusual rock formations such as the natural arch at Šuplja vrata.
The area around the site is ground zero for all sorts of outdoor activities. Go on a horseback ride through the valley at Berane Horse Riding (50 minutes) and keep your eyes peeled for paragliders launching from Paraglajding poletište Konjsko (one hour).
If Plav has whetted your appetite for all things lake-related, make a beeline for glacial Hrid Lake (one hour), which sits at almost 2,000 metres of altitude, in National Park Prokletije, surrounded by an alpine landscape of pine trees and pastureland.
