Settle in for le vacanze at Camping Le Balze, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Volterra in Tuscany’s Pisa province. This is a quiet spot, a tad removed from the hordes of visitors around Pisa’s leaning tower, Florence’s Uffizi Gallery or the UNESCO town of San Gimignano… but those are all within an hour and a half of base if historical wanders appeal (and they surely should). Roaming in the past can start closer at hand too, with a trip into Volterra to wander around its museums, archaeological park, acropolis, medieval town, palace and cathedral. Not enticed by the urban? Stick to the rural instead with trip upon trip to the dozens of vineyards within an hour – this is the Chianti region after all… Once well and truly sozzled, head back to site to soak up some of that vino with a bite to eat. There’s a bar-café on site for snacks on the terrace (and another drink or two) and a small market for stocking up on fresh bread and other essentials. Need a lazy day on site to recover from that winery tour? Pull up a lounger next to the pool and let the Tuscan sun soothe away any throbbing heads.

Great spot near Volterra with epic views. Staff are legends – super friendly & helpful. Toilets/showers are clean but a bit old school. Pitches, pool & shop are ace. Wi-Fi's a bit dodgy, and some spots are tight.

Liked Hezký kemp, čisté toalety, všude teplá voda, toaletní papír i mýdlo. K dispozici pračky a sušička. Příjemný personál, možnost snídaně i menšího nákupu. Krásné okolí.

Disliked Přestože jsme měli velké kempovací místo, nebylo tak veliké, jak bychom si představovali. Trochu horší příjem WIFI.

Liked Location, facilities, helpful, efficientand friendly staff.

Disliked Pitches a little bit cramped together.
Many showers had missing clothes hooks and soap racks which narrowed the choice of cubicle.
Would have liked a view over the valley but it was screened.

Liked Sehr netter Empfang, die Plätze in drei Größen, hier muss man wirklich schauen. Plätze teilweise mit Schatten, Strom vorhanden. Wasser an Wasserstellen auf dem Platz verteilt. Sanitär einfach und sauber. Waschmaschinen und Trockner vorhanden, über App einfach bedienbar.
Sehr schöne Gegend, allerdings mit unglaublich vielen Höhenmetern. Hundeauslauf direkt hinter dem Platz, aber nur wenige 100 Meter.

Nous avons un C.C de 7m avec remorque et l'espace était vraiment bien, on nous a laissé choisir notre emplacement,
personnel agréable et disponible,

Local attractions

Volterra, five minutes’ drive away, should be the first stopoff for any sensible sort: the history of this famed and pretty walled mountaintop town stretches back to the seventh century BC and it shows – Etruscan, Roman and medieval remnants can all be seen here. You’ll need a couple of days to see it properly, but must-sees include the Roman theatre, excavated in the 1950s and still in pretty good nick, the Etruscan City Walls and the Porta all'Arco, and the 13th-century cathedral, home of too many fab frescos, paintings and reliefs to list: go see. An additional must-see – and must-eat-at – is the 15th-century Medicean Fortress, now a prison and housing the famed Fortezza Medicea restaurant, run by inmates: you’ll need to book well in advance, and not huff at the plastic cutlery… If the kids are revolting after all that history (even with a jail trip), take them along to the Berignone nature reserve to spy otters, porpoises and deer among the forests: obviously everyone will have to keep very quiet indeed.
