Check out Camping Village Le Calanchiole, 10 minutes’ drive from the brightly coloured houses of hilltop Capoliveri; it’s a thoroughly family-friendly site with pitches shaded by pine and eucalyptus trees, direct access to a private beach and lots of sports facilities including soccer and volleyball courts. There’s plenty more to suit families too. You have the option of feeding yourselves (there’s a butcher’s shop and market in the complex), but if you’d like a break from feeding hungry kids, just head for the restaurant/pizzeria/self-service bar with stunning views over Stella Gulf Bay in the Tyrrhenian Sea. You can book diving excursions down on the beach, and there’s a pontoon for mooring small craft nearby too. Organised entertainment such as water aerobics and gymnastics are available daily for both adults and youngsters, and cabaret shows keep everyone entertained at night. Guests have access to modern and well-maintained shower rooms, electric hook-ups, water points and waste-disposal areas. Your four-legged friends are catered for too, with a designated space for exercising them on site.

Local attractions

If it’s the sea you’re after, then you can access the site’s private beach directly from the pitches; its waters are shallow, clean and safe for novice swimmers or snorkellers. Lido di Capoliveri Beach (five minutes’ drive) is another popular choice for its sun loungers, windsurfing and kayaking options. If you’re seeking privacy on a quiet beach, head for Felciaio Beach (five minutes) to bob around in its crystal-clear rock pools. Medieval Capoliveri (10 minutes’ drive) is a pleasure to wander, with artisan shops, traditional trattorias and sea views from cobbled streets. Equally enchanting is Porto Azzurro (also 10 minutes), with its photogenic harbour, seafront restaurants and backdrop of lushly forested hills. If more culture is called for, you can take guided tours of the ancient iron mines at Museo delle Miniere di Capoliveri (25 minutes), or walk the ramparts at colossal Forte Falcone (25 minutes). Prefer to get seriously active? Follow scenic trails around Monte Calamita (15 minutes) on foot or by bike, or take boat trips (five minutes’ walk) to secret coves and beaches accessible only from the sea.
