  • Peaceful glampsite five minutes’ drive from Acqui Terme in Piedmont
  • Acqui Terme five minutes’ drive and Canelli wine caves 40 minutes
  • Swimming pool and vineyard walks; wine tasting and cooking classes
Looking for an unusual escape from city life? Try the orb-like geodesic domes at Verdmont, five minutes’ drive from Acqui Terme in the Piedmont wine-growing region of Monferrato. As they’re set in 100 square metres of hillside garden on a private estate, the transparent domes allow you spectacular vineyard views while guaranteeing total privacy (and you can stargaze on clear nights too).  Inside each one is a comfy double bed (all linens supplied), and each overlooks the verdant landscape from its decking. Outdoor showers are close to each unit, as well as compact kitchens for rustling up glamping suppers. While you’re welcome to fend for yourselves food-wise, you can alternatively sign up for the site’s foodie offerings, which cover breakfasts, lunches and dinners; the team can provide a signature afternoon tea as well. When staying on this peaceful property, there’s an outdoor pool for your use with comfy sun loungers around its deck, and walks through the vines if you fancy stretching your legs. You can also be as sociable (or not) as you please, as there are communal cooking classes, yoga sessions and massages on offer as well as sommelier-guided wine tastings (for an extra cost).

Local attractions

Budding gourmets can sample Piedmont produce at local farms where prized goat’s cheese is produced, gelaterias selling delicious ice creams in a myriad of flavours, and vineyards throughout the Monferrato region – many are within half an hour’s drive. Historic Canelli (40 minutes) has several wineries open for tastings as well, and you can also visit the town’s UNESCO-listed cavern complex, where sparkling wines were once stored. There’s more culture to soak up at the ancient spa town of Acqui Terme (five minutes) too. Start a tour at the castle and its museum (home to Roman artefacts food locally) and follow the Corso Bagni route to the ancient Roman aqueduct, one of the best preserved in northern Italy. Should you wish to see more of Italy’s rich heritage, the museums, galleries and royal palaces of Turin are an hour and a half by car. If being outside and active is all you want from your Piedmont sojourn, go wild swimming at Lido di Melazzo on the Erro River (20 minutes), or jump on your bike (you can hire one on site) and explore the Monferrato hills.
