With far-reaching views of wooded hills from its pitches, Wild Camping Albareto sits among woodland at Le Moie di Albareto in the Tuscan-Ligurian-Emilian Apennines. As this is intended as a wild camping experience, the list of facilities is short – basically a washing-up sink and a caravan with an eco-friendly shower and toilet, and drinkable water from the stream. There’s also a gazebo with table, chairs and a store cupboard for meals.
However, the rather splendid setting of the grass pitches (please note, no electricity) more than compensates. Surrounded by pristine nature, they are close to a wildlife pond, hiking trails through the beech forests, and mountain biking routes that head up into the Apennine foothills. Hit the site in autumn and you can go foraging for wild mushrooms too.
If you’d like a little luxury along with your wild camping, head next door to the site owners' eco-friendly B&B where you can treat yourselves to breakfast, local produce tastings and hot showers (at a charge). You can also use the barbecue and picnic area, and hire e-bikes. Access by public transport is easy too; there’s a railway station at Borgo Val di Taro station (10 minutes’ drive) and from there you can catch a bus up to Wild Camping Albareto.

Local attractions
The Ghirardi Regional Nature Reserve and WWF Oasis (15 minutes’ drive) is a haven for walkers and cyclists; you can follow waymarked trails through beech woodland and meadows, keeping an eye out for deer, wild boar and birds of prey. You may get to see wild horses and donkeys grazing in the neighbouring Ghirardi Nature Reserve (20 minutes), along with Maremma sheepdogs guarding their flocks on the hillsides.
Step back in time on a visit to the medieval village of Compiano (15 minutes), with cobbled streets overlooked by its impressive hilltop castle (open occasionally for guided tours of its museums). Bardi (40 minutes) is another pretty village dominated by its castle, where guided tours of its medieval interior come with spectacular views across Val Ceno.
If you’d like a cultural day out, gorgeous Parma (an hour) is your best bet; you can discover artistic treasures in the galleries and libraries of Palazzo della Pilotta, and admire the peerless Romanesque architecture of ornate Parma Cathedral and its spindly baptistery.
