  • Quiet, leafy and family-friendly Lower Saxony site on the Küstenkanal
  • Heeder See five minutes’ drive; Hümmling Nature Park 15 minutes
  • Bread delivery service, picnic spots and firepit; fishing and kayaking
No matter whether you’re in urgent need of a battery recharge or you’re looking to take the kids on an active holiday, you’ll be well served in both instances at Camping Dörpen, five minutes’ drive from Dörpen in Emsland, Lower Saxony. This peaceful spot sits on neatly landscaped grounds full of quiet corners, and it’s right next to the Küstenkanal for kayaking (the site has its own private launch point) or waterside hiking and cycling adventures. Pitches are surrounded by hedgerows for privacy and partially shaded by trees, and handy facilities include electricity and fresh water, greywater drains and a modern shower block. A bread delivery service is available every morning, there are covered communal picnic benches at strategic points around the site, and there’s a firepit set up the pond for alfresco evening feasts. The pond, by the way, is well-stocked with fish so anglers can try a cast or two, and the site owners (dog owners themselves) welcome your four-legged pals too.

Local attractions

Camping Dörpen is in pole position for cycles rides along the Küstenkanal; you can pedal sections of the long-distance Radroute Dortmund-Ems-Kanal or take young kids on shorter routes like the Radroute Dörpen Ost; both trails pass the site. If you haven’t come with a bicycle, you can rent wheels – and e-bikes – five minutes’ drive away. If you’re tempted to snooze in the sun, head for the sandy lake beach edging the Herzogsee, where there’s a safe swimming area, or there’s a play area by the Heeder See as well as facilities for watersports hire. The indoor pool at Dünenbad Dörpen (all five minutes) also has a waterslide, splash fountains and a paddling pool for toddlers. Keep active kids happy with zipwires and giant slides at Surwolds Wald (five minutes), or take a stroll to spot wildlife sculptures (and the real thing, including deer and hares) in the forests and meadows of Hümmling Nature Park (15 minutes).
