  • Peaceful site in Saint-Etienne-du-Grès, a 25-minute drive from Arles
  • Alpilles Natural Regional Park five minutes’ drive; Nîmes 40 minutes
  • Bar and ice-cream kiosk; food shop; playground; shaded pétanque courts
A relaxing holiday in the south of France might be your original plan when you book a spot at Camping Porte des Alpilles, a peaceful, family-friendly site on the outskirts of the Provençal village of Saint-Etienne-du-Grès (five minutes’ drive or a 15-minute walk). However, when you see the numerous natural, historic and architectural highlights in the area, relaxing could become the last thing on your mind, as you draw up plans to go on epic hikes in the Alpilles Natural Regional Park (five minutes); catch a glimpse of wildlife in the Camargue Regional Nature Park (25 minutes); or visit the cities of Arles (25 minutes), Avignon (half an hour) or Nîmes (40 minutes). Of course, if you’re determined to do as little as possible while on holiday, this is also a pretty sweet spot, with pitches shaded by tall trees (the rustling of the leaves conducive to afternoon siestas), a communal barbecue area with plenty of picnic tables, a bar and an ice-cream kiosk. You don’t even have to venture out of the gate to buy a little something for your friends back home – there’s a souvenir store and a small food shop on site (you can also rent a fridge for any perishable purchases). Leisure facilities include shaded pétanque courts and a sheltered games area with a dartboard, table football and a small library, plus a children’s playground with swings and slides. The toilet block has facilities for the disabled, and there’s also a launderette with drying racks and ironing boards to borrow.

What customers say

Great Aussie-run park! Friendly staff, top-notch amenities, and a peaceful vibe. Spacious, private sites near showers. Perfect base for exploring Provence. Some found Wi-Fi spotty, mozzies a nuisance, and showers a bit cool, but most loved it and would come back.

Liked excellent camping site. everything was so clean, theres hedges around each spot so you get some privacy. Toilets and showers very close to each pitch. The food was delicious, the hosts were great. This was my very first camping spot abroad and it has definitely set a standard. I was very happy here and we actually ended up staying an extra night.

Fully-serviced grass site (comfort)

Liked The welcome we received when we arrived was very warm and helpful.

The sanitary facilities were clean and well maintained.

The pizzas were really good and the live music evening was great fun.

The site is calm, relaxing and no loud noise.
You can order bread and croissants for the next day.

Excellent location to visit Tarasscon, Avignon, Arles and many other small towns.

Brilliant starting point for cycle rides as there is a cycle path just behind the site.

Disliked WiFi was VERY poor!

We could access our roaming data tho.

Local attractions

Although Vincent van Gogh spent only about a year in Arles, he is inextricably linked with this pretty city on the Rhône river. The Van Gogh Route takes you to the main sights painted by the artist, from Place du Forum (site of his ‘Café Terrace at Night’) to the amphitheatre, which he depicted in ‘Arena at Arles’. The Palais des Papes in Avignon, a fortified Gothic palace where seven popes resided in the 14th century, has elegant chapels decorated with frescoes and pretty restored gardens with fountains. The Jardin des Doms is a hilltop park with an observation deck overlooking the Rhône. The Roman heritage of Nîmes is still visible in the Maison Carrée temple and the well-preserved amphitheatre, which instead of gladiatorial games now hosts live concerts. Spectacular Roman mosaics can be seen in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, alongside a collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.
