  • Quiet family-friendly site on the Arvert Peninsula near Breuillet
  • Royan, Zoo La Palmyre and Luna Park within a 20-minute drive
  • Swimming pool, paddling pool and summer activities on site
Countryside and coast are both yours for the taking when you stay at Camping Le Relax, on the Arvert Peninsula about five minutes' drive from the Charente-Maritime town of Breuillet (a handy place that's just big enough to have a couple of restaurants and a handful of shops including a butcher and a wine shop). As the name suggests, this quiet site is a lovely place for some rural relaxation, with grass pitches bordered by hedges for privacy and shade. A playground, ping-pong table and pétanque court are on hand for some gentle activity, and there's also an open-air pool that hosts various fun activities (including zorbing and aquabike sessions) and has a paddling pool for the younger guests. A bar sells cool drinks for your chillout time, and there's a small grocery store with bread and pastries baked on site. This laidback family-friendly site ramps up the activity in the summer holidays – come along in July or August and you'll be able to join things like pétanque competitions, archery and volleyball sessions, quizzes, karaoke evenings and other fun events. And what about your days out? Well, there are plenty of options to choose from – Royan and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer are both about 10 minutes' drive away for seaside days, and family attractions like Zoo La Palmyre, Luna Park and Planet Exotica are also close by. Add in watersports, golf, bike rides and tree-climbing parks and it's safe to say you're unlikely to run out of things to do around here…

Local attractions

To the coast first? Royan (10 minutes' drive) is a nice place to explore, with an attractive church, a buzzing central market and a choice of sandy beaches for swims, sandcastles and water activities (paddleboarding and jetskiing among them). Neighbouring Saint-Palais-sur-Mer (10 minutes) is less well known but still a good place to visit, with a couple of beaches and the Maison des Douanes art museum. Families should find plenty to fill their days with in this area – perhaps climbing into the trees at Coolongalook Adventure Park (10 minutes) or playing mini golf and hitting the colourful rides of Luna Park (20 minutes). Planet Exotica (10 minutes) and Zoo La Palmyre (15 minutes) are both great places for animal encounters. On a grownup holiday? Perhaps you'd fancy a game at Golf de Royan, a boat trip to Cordouan lighthouse from Royan, or taking your chances at Casino Barrière Royan (all 10 minutes). Beaches along the Côte Sauvage (25 minutes) are good options for a quieter, more remote vibe.
