  • Family campsite at Saint-Julien-de-Concelles in the Pays de la Loire
  • Nantes 25 minutes’ drive, Puy du Fou 55 minutes
  • Direct access to a lakeside leisure centre, walking and cycling routes
When you’re after a relaxing family break surrounded by lush nature, take a look at Camping du Chêne in the Pays de la Loire village of Saint-Julien-de-Concelles. Life on this site is all about rediscovering the ‘slow life’ amid – as its name suggests – oak forest, giving you the chance to recharge your batteries and unfold your holiday at your own pace. But the chilled vibe on site doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do. Far from it, in fact. Guests have direct access to the Chêne lake for carp and pike fishing, plus kayaking, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding from the Cap Sport and Nature Leisure Centre (five minutes’ walk). There’s a playground to keep youngsters occupied, plus tennis courts, beach volleyball nets near the lake and a boules ground for family competitions. You can also follow waymarked walks through the surrounding woods – keeping an eye out for the busy bees foraging for nectar from the lakeside hives. If you’re into more long-distance hikes, several are accessible right from the site – and cyclists don’t miss out either, as the Loire à Vélo bike track passes the campsite. Foodie concerns are all taken care of too: there’s a breakfast service (put orders in the night before), a terrace restaurant overlooking the lake and an on-site grocery store for stocking up on essentials.

Liked Good location for the lake .
Supermarket was 5 min walk .
Good size pitch .
Lots of shade and sun available .

Disliked The wash facilities were very poor for the size of the camp.
Only 5 ladies cubicles . Dirty wash basin . No hand dryer/paper towels available .
Only 2 male cubicles and one urinal.
No toilet paper available in the morning until the cleaner arrived at 9:30. No hair dryers.
The showers were left in a state . The site had a large group of people staying at the weekend and the site team should have been increased to help with the cleaning of this area .

Liked Location,
Friendly staff
Size of pitches

Disliked The site appeared unloved and disorganised.
Shower facilities were clean, but skylights needed cobwebs removing. In general the lack of attention to detail overgrown vegetation. During the morning between the hours of 07:00 - 09:00 the noise of road traffic was very loud

Liked Welcomed on arrival by the owner , given a choice of pitches .. we stayed on number 22 close to the lake .. what a beautiful view on an evening .
The site is very clean and spacious and offers different options for overnight stays including a motorhome aire.
The showers are hot and there are plenty of plug sockets for straighteners, hairdryers , shavers etc .
We used the washing machine for a small charge of 5 euros.
This really is a family friendly site and also welcomes dogs ...
There is a play area , games and a pool on site, located nearby is a tennis court and by the lake and adventure centre.

The local supermarket , petrol station is directly across the road and the local town is a 15 minutes walk away.

The owner and the staff are really lovely and very approachable .

Would we stay again ..... Absolutely

Liked Large pitches with good privacy. Quiet location with excellent links to nantes. Beautiful lake for walks. Excellent facilities for cycling. Pool is clean and well maintained. Staff are friendly and approachable. Close to supermarket

Disliked Following Google maps it tried to direct us down a very narrow track. (No fault of the camp site)

Liked Location on (in) the lake

Disliked Building work was going on at entrance but no signs or anyone to show where to go. Tried another entrance then another camper gave us the barrier code. Still no obvious reception, another camper gave us info, found temporary office - closed. Rang helpline, no answer. Eventually found a nice young man who showed us the pitches available. All were boggy and flooded and we knew heavy thunderstorms were due so we decided not the stay. We were told the washing machine was unavailable, the facilities were very basic and the site was unloved.

Local attractions

For big-city adventures, head for historic Nantes (25 minutes’ drive) to tour the mighty medieval Château des Ducs de Bretagne, towering over the Loire River, and spot the ornate marble tombs of French royalty in the Gothic-style cathedral. Culture all done, hop aboard the gigantic animatronic Grand Éléphant and take a walking tour of the Île de Nantes, before heading to a Place du Bouffay bar for a glass of local Muscadet wine. To see history brought to life in a spectacular way, flit between theatrical extravaganzas – with casts of hundreds – featuring Roman gladiator battles and Viking longboat sieges at Puy du Fou theme park (55 minutes), where you can also watch birds of prey in flight and blacksmiths at work. If a day at the seaside is requested, head to the sweeping bay at La Baule-Escoublac (an hour and 10 minutes), which has beach clubs for the kids and gentle waves safe for swimming. If the tide’s going out, see if you can spot ‘The Ocean Snake’ sculpture by Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping as it appears from the waves at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (an hour).
