  • 20 minutes' drive from Ypres and In Flanders Fields Museum
  • Farm shop on site with an wide range of homegrown and local produce
If you want a full flavour of French cuisine (oui), you'll find it here in French Flanders. The shop at Camping de la Ferme des Saules, in the grounds of a working farm in the Flanders mountains, is piled with all sorts of fruit and veg fresh from the fields for you to sample, as well as a range of tiptop produce from other local suppliers including fresh meat, pâtés, cheese, eggs, sweets and homemade Flemish waffles. Pick up some local fruit juices and beers to wash it all down and you’ve got everything you need for quite the French feast. Ferme des Saules is a family-friendly site, half a kilometre from the Belgian border and 20 minutes' drive from Ypres. Guests are welcome to wander the farm during opening hours to meet the chickens, goats and pony, or you could work your appetite up further with a pre-dinner game of pétanque while the kids bounce around the playground or trampoline. Spacious grass pitches are within easy reach of a smart modern toilet block that houses toilets, showers, a kids’ bathroom and an accessible bathroom. There’s also free wifi access around the site. Ferme des Saules is a few kilometres from Bailleul for yet more foodie options at its restaurants, bistros, bars and speciality shops: you can reach town within a five-minute drive, a 15-minute cycle or a 45-minute walk, depending on how many calories you need to work off...

What customers say

This friendly farm campsite offers spacious, private pitches with clean, modern facilities. Guests praise the excellent on-site farm shop, which stocks local produce, and the warm welcome from staff. Its peaceful rural location is ideal for exploring the local area, including Ypres and WW1 sites, and is conveniently located for ferry ports. Some minor issues were noted regarding pitch conditions in wet weather and the unisex nature of some facilities.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked We had one night here before returning home the next day from Calais. The site is lovely, all the staff were friendly and helpful. Shop on site selling local products and a few gifts. Large pitches -the one we chose had views of the surrounding countryside. Added bonus, for me, was the visit from owners dog and cat. My favourite site, very relaxing, would definitely recommend.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked The perfect place for a stopover enroute to the tunnel. Amazing value. Excellent facilities. Large pitches. Friendly hosts…… & a beautiful sunset :-)

Disliked Some road noise on the lower pitches but it really didn’t bother us

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked This site has a real French charm about it. The farm shop sells very fresh produce and it all looks delightful. We bought a couple of steaks from there and they were delicious. The staff on arrival and throughout our stay were warm and friendly. The pitches on this site all seemed a generous size and it was nice not to be too close to other campers. Our pitch was fairly near to the road but that said it was quiet and we had a very peaceful night's sleep. The showers / toilet/ dishwashing block was clean and tidy. The location was good for a lot of cycle routes straight from the campsite . There are some very useful facilities too - a laundry, a children's play area and a well equipped, large, indoor eating area.

Disliked The showers had a good supply of hot water but the design of them could have been better. It was hard to keep your clothes, towels, shoes out of the way of water. This area was busy at times and it seemed a bit odd to have people using toilets in the same area as washing up their dishes.
However, I would stay again and I would recommend to others.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked One of the cleanest sites we have been on. The shower block and toilets were very clean indeed. The farm shop was well stocked and staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend it.

Disliked Would prefer the toilet roll inside the toilet instead of outside, but that's just my preference.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Very friendly welcome with great check-in hours. Given tour of campsite on buggy. Clean and good facilities. Very reasonable price.

Disliked Needing to take toilet paper from expensive dispenser into cubicle. It's ok when you know, but this caught out an unobservant child.

Power optional grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Stayed September. Quiet site even though close to a road. Toilets, showers, washing all clean. Toilets had seats which is unusual for France. Choice of pitches, some with hedges (just growing) the larger pitches are grass but really good. As it was raining when we arrived we opted for hard standing/ gravel pitch for two nights but all pitches looks good. The staff were very pleasant and the farm shop with various food and gifts. It was Sunday when we walked into town, not expecting anything to be open but a couple of bars were and was able to get a drink.
I loved the friendly farm dog who loves playing football and bringing pieces of wood to play with him

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Such a nice campsite for the price. The location is great, with on-site farm shop and was close enough to drive into Ypres for dinner in the evening. Lovely to wander around and see the farm animals and there are enough pitches to choose from that you wont be disturbed by them in the morning if you don’t want to be! We liked it so much we stayed on the way back to Calais too.

The facilities were modern, spotless and had toilet paper and hand soap which was nice. The tent pitches were very spacious and the ones we chose were both nicely sheltered. The owner was lovely and very helpful.

Disliked The WiFi worked sometimes but was a bit patchy. It was a little dark getting to the wash rooms in the evening but they’re easy to find. An additional toilet and washing up stall on the other side of the site helps too.

Local attractions

At Bailleul, start in the flower-filled Grand’Place, dominated by the 62-metre belfry tower of the town hall, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb to the top for spectacular views towards the mountains and to get up close to the 35-bell carillon. Around the corner from the square is the Museum of Benoit-De-Puydt, a converted private house where you can learn a bit about the town’s role during the war and visit the exhibition of Flemish art. Also worth a visit is the Country Life Museum in Steenwerck, a 15-minute drive from the site and set up to recreate a Flemish village in 1900. The major Belgian point of interest close by is Ypres, 20 minutes' drive from the site, where you can tour the battlefields, visit the war cemeteries and learn more about the area's historical significance at the In Flanders Fields Museum.
