The fir-covered Pyrenees provide the spectacular backdrop for Camping Ascou la Forge, in the south-western French department of Ariège. The family-friendly site sits at over 1,000 metres above sea level on the banks of La Lauze river, which provides refreshing coolness during the summer. The town of Ax-les-Thermes is 15 minutes’ drive (and several tight hairpin bends on the Route de l’Aude) away. The site is aimed as much to those seeking a peaceful break – lazing by the swimming pool, improving their pétanque game or perhaps indulging in a spot of trout fishing – as to active types, who can go on challenging hikes around the Étang Bleu area (20 minutes’ drive), where pretty alpine lakes sit in the shade of wooded mountains like Pic de Tarbésou. Climbers can usually find like-minded adventurers at the jagged Dent d’Orlu (25 minutes), while mountain-bikers might want to have a go at the Col du Pradel mountain pass (15 minutes). If all that activity has left your gear muddy or dusty, just throw it all in the washing machine and leave it in the drying room ready for the next day. There are also multiple shower and toilet blocks (including facilities for disabled guests), plus a washing-up area. In the evening, you might choose to sample the lively dining scene of Ax-les-Thermes; however, if you don’t want to deal with those hairpin bends after dark, there’s also a restaurant at the site, plus a food shop for those who want to get the barbecue going.

Local attractions

Among the residents at the House of Wolves (half an hour’s drive) are Canadian, European and Arctic wolves, but there is also a petting zoo with pygmy goats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Other attractions include a glass tunnel taking you deep inside the pack and panning for gold in the Oriège river. The underground tunnels at the Niaux cave (40 minutes) are not illuminated, so you’ll be given a portable lamp at the start of the tour. Prepare to be impressed by the dozens of prehistoric wall paintings of bison and other animals in the Salon Noir, plus a series of red geometric signs the meaning of which continues to puzzle the experts. Check out the impressive ruins of the hilltop fortress of Château de Montségur (one hour), thought to date back to the 1600s. From here you can take in expansive views of the surrounding mountainous landscape, including the Massif de Tabe.

Liked The location was beautiful, site reached by bendy roads! Toilets/showers very clean. Proprietors very friendly and helpful despite not understanding us - but we managed! Site very basic, in the middle of nowhere but perfect for our two night stop over on the way to Spain.

Disliked Beware! We went into the pub next door (nothing to do with the site) and paid 10€ for two halves of larger. Total rip off!

Liked Lovely away from it all site with fabulous Mountain View’s. We had a very relaxing stay and enjoyed the region. Wi-Fi available at the pitch was a real bonus and the campsite facilities are good. The thermal spa in Ax Les Thermes was a special treat. If you turn right out of the campsite and follow the mountain road towards Rouze it is a spectacular drive.

Liked Wundervoller Platz mit großen Stellplätzen. Sanitäranlagen sind wirklich sauber und die Kabinen für WC und Dusche haben genug Platz. Der Herr an der Rezeption war total freundlich. Kommunikation auf englisch war problemlos möglich.
WLAN ist auch klasse!
Absolute Empfehlung!!!

Liked The location was INSANE! The views from here were absolutely incredible. Really spacious, super chilled out, great shower and washing facilities! Can even preorder warm croissants for the morning!

Liked Bonita con parcelas anchas para poner tu autocaravana todo está muy limpio y al contrario de algunos comentarios no creo que esté tan anticuado. Contaba con una cafetería-bar y un poco de productos de alimentación por si faltaba algo más que no te hubieras llevado. Íbamos con nuestras dos perritas y no hubo ningún problema en ningún momento y también estuvieron muy a gusto. Repetiremos.

Disliked Esto no es culpa del Camping solo pasamos ahí una noche y unos niños estaban haciendo barullo y eso entorpeció la noche un poco.
