If you’re holidaying with the kids, get out into the fresh Pyrénées air straight from your pitch for walks and cycle rides in the forested foothills. Paddleboard along the River Ousse from Orthez (35 minutes’ drive), and get the adrenaline pumping on rope courses and climbing nets strung through the forest canopy at Lacq Aventure (half an hour). Meet cuddly alpacas at Alpagas et Amis de Soubestre (10 minutes ), or take toddlers to ride tiny Shetland ponies at La Pêcherie d’Aurit (15 minutes). Kids sorted, it’s time for some grown-up time. Follow the exhibits detailing the restoration of 14th-century Château de Morlanne, which dominates its namesake village, or tour the vineyard and sample high-quality wines at Château de Cabidos (both 10 minutes). A day in Pau (50 minutes) gives you time to admire the exquisite coffered ceilings and Gobelins tapestries in the landmark Château de Pau before tucking into lunch at a restaurant in the Quartier du Hédas. Round off your trip by taking the funicular up to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, from where you can glimpse snow-capped mountain peaks in good weather.
