Bordering peaceful Tjele Langsø lake and with pitches tucked among greenery, Vammen Camping in Central Denmark is a site dedicated to music, song and laughter. Think choral singing and drum playing during the day, and nightly jam sessions around an open fire. You are welcome to bring your own instruments, use the site’s piano or guitars, step up to the mic for a singsong or simply sit by and enjoy the show.
But it’s not all just about music, as outdoor action is on the cards too… Like organised activities for kids, ping pong and pétanque, a beach volleyball court and space for playing rounders or football. Down at the lake, you can swim from the sandy beach, dive off the raft, kayak or go fishing – and then retire to the sauna when you’ve worn yourself out with all the physical stuff.
Food plays a large part in daily life here as well. Homemade organic rolls are available every morning, with regional sausages, meatball soup and Danish apple cake often served too. You can also cook in the covered communal kitchen and eat in the dining area, which doubles as the concert hall.
There’s tourist information, ice cream and snacks at the kiosk, along with any sports equipment you might want to borrow. Other helpful amenities include hot showers, a baby-changing area and laundry room. The supermarket in Vammen (five minutes’ drive) should have anything else you need.

Local attractions
There are woodland or lakeside walks and bicycle routes to be accessed from the pitches, a waterside golf course (half an hour’s drive) and scenic strolls to be had along Lynderupvej beach (25 minutes), which is a popular spot for watching stunning sunsets on clear evenings.
Learn about local prehistory at Hvolris Jernalderlandsby (15 minutes), an open-air museum with farmhouses, a blacksmith’s shop and sculpture trail in a reconstructed Iron Age village. There are remains of a Viking fort and a recreated longhouse at Fyrkat Viking Museum (25 minutes), where ‘Vikings’ demonstrate traditional handicrafts in summer.
Let the kids loose on waterslides and dinosaur trails at Djurs Sommerland (an hour), and although it’s a long day out, Legoland Billund Resort (an hour and a half) is one of the most popular attractions in Central Denmark, with rollercoasters, family rides and the world in miniature made of Lego. Your offspring will doubtless want to go.
