The Campine region of north-eastern Belgium is a top destination for cyclists – or, indeed, for anyone keen to explore its wetlands and forests. Making the most of all that requires some accommodation, and slap bang in the middle of this area is Camping GT Keiheuvel. With spacious pitches, this site is popular with families thanks to the presence of a play area and an outdoor swimming pool with a slide (open during high season only). While the kids entertain themselves and make new friends, the grownups can relax poolside or, if they’re feeling particularly active, hit the on-site sports hall, with a gym and tennis courts. A 10-minute walk past Aeroclub Keiheuvel (where you can watch gliders take to the air), leads to a recreation park with an adventure playground, miniature golf and go-karts. Meanwhile, cyclists shouldn’t miss the Fietsen door de Bomen (15 minutes’ drive or half an hour by bike), a cycle path with stretches going through the tree canopy. This site scores highly in terms of leisure facilities, but what about amenities? Well, it’s top marks again, with showers and a toilet block (including facilities for the disabled), plus a washing-up area, launderette and recycling points. There’s also a café for when you start to feel hungry, or you can stock up on provisions (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away) and have a barbecue. There are also plenty of dining options in the town of Balen (five minutes).

Powered grass site (woodland)

Liked: Wir hatten wunderschönen und ruhigen Stellplatz unter Bäumen mit Strom und Wasser. Die Sanitäranlagen sind etwas in die Jahre gekommen aber immer sauber und mit reichlich heißen Wasser.

Meadow powered grass tent site

Liked: It was supper quiet at this time (first weekend of October). We camped in a tent and were the only nutters to do so at this time and place. Electric blankets saved the trip.

Disliked: all was as expected.

Meadow powered grass tent site

Liked: Really nice area with super friendly staff and pool access which was not expected!!!

Disliked: Kind of in the middle of nowhere and no shops open late or on Sundays. Cash only at the bars and loud music until 4am

Liked: We vonden het geweldig, een prachtige plek die we meer dan eens zullen bezoeken.

Disliked: We waren ongelukkig dat we naar huis moesten, want we hadden daar voor altijd kunnen blijven:-)

Liked: We absolutely love this campsite. The pitches are generous. Fantastic playground for the kids. The location is brilliant. You are within travelling distance of so many places. There is a leisure facility next door to the campsite which I would highly recommend. I would say to be aware that traffic seems to be heavy around Antwerp when you’re travelling so allow a little extra time for that. We enjoyed so much that we extended our stay. We will definitely come back to this campsite. The Belgium people are very friendly and their English is very good which makes communication easier.

Disliked: The toilet facilities are basic but clean. No soap available in toilets to wash your hands. No hand dryer or paper towels to dry your hands. Toilet paper is only available outside the cubicles so you have to plan how much you might need before going into the cubicle which is not ideal.

Local attractions

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my. These are just some of the residents at Pakawi Park (15 minutes’ drive), a forested zoo where you can also see cheetahs, capuchin monkeys and pink flamingoes. And when the kids get tired of the animals (as if…), they can take a break on the giant bouncy castle. Sahara Lommel (half an hour) is a nature reserve named after the large expanse of sand at its core. Unlike its African namesake, though, this area is surrounded by green forests and dotted with lakes. You can spot birds like grebes and ducks here, or climb the 30-m Uitkijktoren Lommelse Sahara tower for far-reaching views. Amusement rides await at Bobbejaanland (35 minutes), with something for every age group – from gentle boat trips along a lazy river to thrilling rollercoasters and water attractions – all spread between four themed areas, including a Cowboy Town.
