- Colourful cottages among lush gardens on the outskirts of El Calafate
- Lago Argentino five minutes’ drive; Glaciarium Ice Museum 15 minutes
- Buffet breakfast with homemade products; resident chickens
With its vibrantly painted cottages (both inside and out) and a flower garden dotted with willows, poplars and organic fruit trees (plus a few pretty hidden corners), Kiritina's House Homestay is a lively burst of colour in the middle of the dramatically desolate, wind-swept Patagonian landscape. Sitting on the outskirts of El Calafate (five minutes’ drive to the town centre), on the southern shore of Lago Argentino, it makes for a warm, hospitable spot to return to after an adventurous day spent exploring the mountain peaks, glaciers and freshwater lakes of Argentina’s Santa Cruz province.
The site is run by Rubén and María, who keep farm animals and their own pets on site, so there is always a dog or a cat or a chicken to fuss over. Guests are welcome to use the garden as an extra room: there is plenty of seating among the trees, which create a sort of microclimate.
A barbecue is provided, so all you need to worry about is sourcing provisions; and that is not a concern either, with several shops about one kilometre away (five minutes’ drive, or a 10- to 15-minute walk). Your friendly hosts prepare a daily breakfast buffet with a range of delicious homemade products, and for dinner you could head into town to sample traditional dishes like steaks and cazuela stews, not to mention robust Argentinian red wines.

Local attractions
Lago Argentino (five minutes’ drive), the country’s largest freshwater lake, has several observation decks from which to admire its vastness. On its shores, the diverse habitats of Reserva Laguna Nimez are home to butterflies, foxes and flamingoes. Further east along the lake, Punta Walichu - Reserva Natural y Arqueológica has painted caves and the remains of ancient settlements.
Housed in a sleek, contemporary building, the Glaciarium Patagonian Ice Museum (15 minutes) explores the formation of ice and glaciers through interactive audiovisual displays. One of its exhibitions invites visitors to consider the negative effects of human intervention on the planet.
On the western edges of Santa Cruz province, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (an hour and 45 minutes) is a vast area of millennia-old glaciers and a UNESCO World Heritage site. But there is more to this reserve than just ice; it also has large areas of forest inhabited by South Andean deer, red foxes and pumas.
