  • Wild camping on a working farm a 10-minute drive from the Welsh coast
  • Laugharne 15 minutes’ drive; Wild Lakes Wales 20 minutes
  • Sea views and direct access to a path leading to Marros Sands beach
You’ve settled on south-western Wales for your holiday but can’t quite decide between Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire? Consider staying at Middlepool Retreat Campsite, straddling the border between the two counties. At this wild camping site on a family-run beef and sheep farm a 25-minute drive from Tenby, you can park right by your pitch on a large grassy field and get exploring the local area with your four-legged buddy, who is a welcome guest. The spectacular views of the sea might inspire you to go south towards the coast, where beaches like Morfa Bychan (10 minutes’ drive) and vast Pendine Sands (15 minutes) await. From the cliffs overlooking the former, it might also be possible to catch a glimpse of seals and dolphins swimming in Carmarthen Bay. A footpath from the site leads to Marros Sands, a secluded beach with caves at its western end. At low tide, you might be able to see a series of tree stumps, part of a 5,000-year-old petrified forest. And the good news is that you can let your dog run free at all of these beaches. Back at the site with an appetite, you can devour what you might have purchased at Greenacre Market Garden, a pick-your-own farm a five-minute drive away. Alternatively, there are supermarkets and restaurants in the village of Pendine (five minutes).

Local attractions

For a Dylan Thomas-flavoured pilgrimage, start by visiting Cartref Dylan Thomas, a boathouse in Laugharne (15 minutes’ drive), on the estuary of the River Taf, where the poet spent the last few years of his life. From there, it’s a 15-minute walk to Dylan’s resting place in the grounds of St Martin’s Church. At Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes), thrill rides include the wooden Megafobia roller coaster and the metal arch of Vertigo, the UK’s tallest sky swing. Seriously brave folks only need apply here. At Heatherton World of Activities (20 minutes), you can have a go at paintballing, ziplining or go-karting. If you prefer water-based action, Wild Lakes Wales (20 minutes) has a pool with a giant inflatable course and a larger reservoir for wakeboarding, as well as an indoor climbing wall. And if you time things just right, you can leave the kids to do their thing while you unwind in the sauna (Saturdays only).

Liked Very friendly & welcoming. Enjoyed the quiet of the site & the ‘wild camping’ feel.

Close to Pendine & Morras sands.
Being towed out of a muddy rut - a learning experience!

Disliked Nothing disliked.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked Peaceful location with lovely surroundings. Very quiet ( had the field to ourselves on the last night)Susan and Paula so friendly and welcoming and helpful with suggestions for local activities. Drinking water, waste disposal and rubbish bins which was all we needed. Had to drive to get to nearby villages & towns although we could have walked to Marros and used bus services but weather wasn't too great.

Disliked Nothing to dislike apart from Welsh wind & rain which is no fault of the owner!

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked Fantastic host! Thank you to Paula and her lovely family for making us feel so welcome! Host went above and beyond to offer us everything we could need and even drew us a fab map of places to visit locally and a cute little chocolate bar! Site was exactly what we hoped for and we will be returning in the not so distant future. Very happy campers ☺️

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked We arrived in horrendous weather and the host couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. She even offered the use of the AGA to cook dinner. We were the only people on the camping field. The facilities are very, very basic. No toilet or washroom but as we were in our MH we didn't need anything. There is drinking water and an elsan disposal point and 2 bins for rubbish/recycling. The lack of facilities though means this site is perfect for MH or vanlife types.

Disliked It would've been nice to have a shower and toilet but the simplicity gives it a nice, remote feel

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked A small quiet rural site with just water and disposal point (no toilets) and around 5 pitches. The perfect quiet spot for us to enjoy after the busy day at the beach. The hosts were very welcoming. Don’t let the accepts groups put you off as I think this is for when there are large events on at Pendine sands. We would definitely go back !

Disliked As this is just a field you will need levelling blocks if you are fussy about being 100% level - we didn’t use ours as we were fine

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review, We would love to welcome you again.
