  • Peaceful family-run Mid Wales site in the grounds of a watermill
  • A 10-minute walk to a vineyard; a 25-minute drive to the Stiperstones
  • Accessible family shower room; farm-run ice cream station next door
From acting like a wine aficionado on the local vineyard to hiking around the historic sites on the Stiperstones… Millers Rest Campsite will get you recharging your batteries in no time. This place is a family-run site in Powys, on the grounds of the 17th-century Bacheldre Watermill and 10 minutes’ drive away from the Shropshire Hills. That means that sublime scenery’s a given, including mature trees, farmlands and streams surrounding the site. It’s really quite remote… all the more privacy and peace for your lot. Despite all this, there’s no need to give up your creature comforts. The site has free showers including an accessible shower room (suited to larger families) and a heated toilet block. There’s also a dishwashing area and waste disposal area to ensure that you keep your grassy pitches nice and tidy, primed for more relaxation. As for tracking down some tasty eats, well, there’s a homemade ice cream station next door to the site, where the flavours are made from dairy fresh from their farm. Thankfully, there's no shortages of pubs in the surrounding area either, with popular spots in Bishop’s Castle (15 minutes’ drive, and a good place for indie shops and cafés too) and several more pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Closer by, there’s a hotel bar serving food (five minutes’ drive) and Churchstoke (under five minutes’ drive) has a food shop, petrol station, launderette and café for more snacks, afternoon teas and the like.

What customers say

This chill, quiet spot has roomy, flat sites & modern loos. Travellers love the rural peace, nearby wineries & ice cream farms, plus the ace owners. Pizza nights are a winner! Minor quibbles like critter noise or grass length don't spoil the good vibes, with most keen to come back.

Liked Warm friendly atmosphere fire pits on site for guests to use.

Disliked No where near to get fire wood from. Showers could be cleaned more regularly but otherwise they do the job. Was a busy weekend so expected.

Liked We really enjoyed our stay, the man was very friendly and accommodating.
The shower blocks were clean and there were good washing facilities for the dirty dishes!
We were apart of a large group and felt very comfortable and settled during our stay.
It was our first time camping as a family and we really enjoyed ourselves.
One thing I will say is maybe get a play park or outdoor splash area for kids when it’s hot to try keep them entertained and cool.
We actually made our own slip and slide and it was awesome! ☺️

Liked Really great location. The man who ran the site was super friendly and helpful and it was so nice to be somewhere not too rowdy but where everyone still had fun

Disliked The showers were awful. While I saw staff cleaning them throughly, by the time I had a shower it was disgusting

Liked Space for children to play, could use fire pits. Bathroom facilities clean. Friendly site.

Disliked Unlevel field, only one shower (unless using family shower, code needed) muck spreading one morning, terrible smell, obscene amount of flies everywhere, noisey site with loads of crows, cockerels..

Liked What a lovely little site! We booked a week’s stay and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
• Very warm and welcoming hosts who go really do go above and beyond
• Stonebaked authentic pizza on Friday evenings was a great touch and nice that there is a dedicated seating area to be served them
• Large pitch sizes (we had 8 man tent, porch awning, gazebo and car all on the pitch with ample space)
• Big area for the kids to play. We brought along an Airtrax mat and Inflatable Roller that became the hub for all the kids on site to play so it was brilliant for them
• Great dishwashing area with 2 sinks
• Toilet block and shower in great location (I have seen a few comments regarding cleanliness of showers but I cannot fault them as they were immaculate after cleaning and as with any campsite, it is down to individuals to clean things after themselves as the owners cannot check after every use. I think the fly situation with the hot weather likely was the issue)
• a bonus for me was small rubbish bins that are emptied each day rather than the larger communal style wheeled bins that are emptied less regularly on most sites. I hate those wooden walk in bin sheds you have to brave and then try to lift the heavy lids to get your bags in. This was great and a more hygienic setup.
• Fire pit on site which we borrowed for a couple of nights to toast marshmallows
• Pretty and rural location. Homemade ice cream shop and vineyard/cafe on the road opposite, Mellington Hall Hotel just 5 mins drive away with beautiful grounds and play area and some great friendly pubs nearby. We visited The Lion for a cold beer on the hottest day of the year and then continued further up to the river for some splashing and shade under the trees.
All in all a great all-round site and excellent value for money.

* little suggestions would be to maybe have something on site or a small dedicated area for the kids to group and meet up. We had loads of the kids over to our pitch from other tents which was great as we had lots of kids toys and gymnastics equipment and so it was lovely that they could all join in together. We previously stayed on a site that had a shed of old donated kids bikes and it was a genius idea to keep the kids entertained and wear them out ☺️

A fly/bug zapper in the toilet block, especially the shower room would be a good addition

Also maybe missing an opportunity by not selling firewood and marshmallows on site. We asked in the local shops for marshmallows and couldn’t find any so eventually ordered a marshmallow amazon delivery to site 😂

Disliked The only thing letting it down this week was the flies. Assuming due to the rural location, still pond, dairy farm opposite and that fact we had come on the hottest week of the year, there was just no escape from them 🙈 on a positive though, my youngest daughter was previously terrified of flies but seems to have made peace with them after admitting defeat! It became our evening challenge to swat as many out of the tent bedrooms and zip them up before they could sneak back in.
All part of the fun 😂

Liked Separated pitches each with a firepit was a great touch, facilities are exactly what you want from a campsite (hot showers, clean toilets and both are just a few metres walk from pitches), there is a coffee cart in the morning and I think a pizza cart in the evening sometimes though I was only there for one night as working nearby. The setting is extremely tranquil and there is an area to keep dry and play some games in case of bad weather, perfect for both couples who just want to sit by the fire with a bottle of wine but also families as kids can easily be occupied here

Local attractions

While pubs are certainly one place to put back a few local ales, those of you who are a bigger fan of a glass of red or white will want to pay a visit to Kerry Vale Vineyard (10 minutes’ walk) to sample their flavours. There’s a brewery in Montgomery (10 minutes’ drive) for another drinks-themed outing or perhaps a tour of the town's castle, independent shops, cafés or visitor centre. What’s the cocktail in Welshpool (20 minutes)? Well, it might be the heritage railway, modern art or the canal works. Meanwhile, at Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (35 minutes), you’ll stumble upon a tasty mix of moorland walks, mountain biking trails and a stream through the valley, all owned by the National Trust. Like to hone in on some historic sites while you’re on your holidays too? Well, there’s Clun Castle (25 minutes) not too far away and a Bronze Age stone circle at Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (15 minutes). More historic sites litter the way around the five and a half-mile hilly hike around the Stiperstones (25 minutes).
