A peaceful Powys stay, with stunning surroundings and stacks of space? Make your way to Glanusk Caravan Park, where relaxing stays can be had in the historic grounds of Glanusk Estate, one of Wales’ largest privately owned estates. It's also rather gorgeous, with a fine collection of features like walled gardens and Celtic standing stones to wander around, and listed buildings including the splendid turreted Tower Bridge over the River Usk. And it’s not just the views right there on site that are pretty special – the estate is surrounded by the epic scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and has spectacular views up to the Black Mountains too. Country pursuits like cycling, pony trekking and canoeing can all be had nearby, and there’s easy access to these and other outings via the nearby A40 and B4558. Spending time on site is an equally fine prospect however – and that goes for dogs too, who are most welcome to join you here. Fishing for trout and salmon is available to book on the five-mile private stretch of the River Usk. Ask on site about local ambles too – one member of the team is a Brecon Beacons Ambassador and has lots more suggestions up their sleeves. For a short stroll, head towards the award-winning high street in the town of Crickhowell (40 minutes away on foot) to source provisions from the butcher's shop, bakery and restaurants or browse boutiques for antiques, clothes, gifts and books. Back at the park, an amenity building has disabled facilities, showers, underfloor heating, toiletries and hair dryers; other amenities include waste disposal areas, dog and bike-washing points, and wifi.

Powered grass and gravel motorhome site

Liked Delightful site. Lovely base for a few different types of walk in the countryside. Site is very well maintained and toilet/shower block is modern and clean. My dogs loved the river usk tiny beach area, where they could cool off by paddling in the water (strictly no stick throwing or swimming for humans allowed) and a lovely little picnicarea with benches. The canal walk is also lovely, both ways are very shaded so ideal for dog walks. I have yet to explore the forest walk too so I will be back for a weekend visit (despite my 'disliked' comments). Felt very safe there as a solo female traveller.

Disliked Motorhome/caravan pitches are very close to eachother (as they are in many sites), which was fine until my 'neighbour' turned up, who were close enough to hear the bathroom being used as all windows were open due to the heat. Also no shade from the relentless sun for any pitch as far as I could see and sun reflecting off neighbours van was not fun. There were a few free pitches when I was there but it seemed that pitches are allocated numerically therefore we were all sardined on one side.

Liked Clean showers and toilets, walking around the estate via river & canel was great. Overall very pleased.

Disliked Piches not the biggest, tight with neighbours, people camping in Dog field & playing football/ scaring my old dog. Plus noise echoes around camp site .
Wifi drops in & out.

Liked Walks around the estate. Next to river and canal could walk to Crickhowell along either. Lovely food and beer garden at Bear Hotel.

Disliked Only niggle is showers. Didn't like that you had no room for clothes because it was a communal changing room. I don't like underdressing infont of people but that's just me. There is a disabled shower/toilets so I used that as site quiet.

Liked Beautiful setting on the Glanusk Estate with really easy access to Crickhowell, the river Usk and the Canal.

The facilities are clean and lovely warm showers.

Disliked Would be great if there was a better family shower room as showering, drying and dressing two toddlers is chaos in the standard stalls and the shower head in the disabled shower wouldn't stay put

Liked Setting, toilets.

Disliked A fridge for tent customers.
Noise in the evening and very early morning. On one side we had a large group every night on the other we had someone chanting at 6am!

Route directions

Access to Glanusk Caravan Park is via the gates on the B4558 (Cwm Crawnon Road) as there is no access to the site from the A40. If you are approaching from the Brecon direction on the A40, do not turn right at Bwlch towards Llangynidr to access the site, as this will take you to a very narrow and impassable bridge. Instead, carry on past the main gates of the site, then turn right by the petrol station and head over the Crickhowell Bridge before turning right onto the B4558 (Cwm Crawnon Road).

Glanusk Caravan Park is within an International Dark Sky Reserve, the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Wales, so plan a bit of time to turn your eyes skywards after dusk – on a clear night you're bound to be treated to quite the display. For a taste of local history, take a trip to Blaenavon (25 minutes' drive), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 that's home to the Big Pit National Coal Museum, Blaenavon Ironworks, the World Heritage Centre and Blaenavon Heritage Railway. In Pantyscallog (half an hour), the Brecon Mountain Railway tells another historic story as it makes its way along the full length of Pontsticill Reservoir. For pubs, cafés and a small town with an award-winning high street, Crickhowell is within walking or cycling distance and hosts a walking festival, literary festival and numerous other events throughout the year. For more urban exploring, it's eight miles to Abergavenny, 12 miles to Brecon, 14 miles to Talgarth and 20 miles to Hay-on-Wye.
