  • Wooden pods with ensuites; general store and café five minutes’ drive
Doing the North Coast 500? Take a couple of days off from your itinerary and hang out at Orchid Pods, set in a peaceful Caithness meadow with breathtaking views to Lybster Bay and the mountains of Morven. Accommodation is in a couple of cute wooden pods, each with a sofa and TV in the spacious open-plan living/dining area, and a comfy double bed with Egyptian cotton sheets supplied. The kitchen corner comes with fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave and induction hob, and all cutlery and crockery – there’s also complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and free-range eggs to get your started on arrival. The ensuite has a powerful shower with ample hot water and a towel warmer to keep things cosy. Outside you have the use of picnic tables and a firepit (wood can be supplied at an extra cost); be sure to cosy up in the warmth on clear nights to see if you can spot the Northern Lights; you won’t be disappointed if they don’t appear as you’ll be dazzled by the glittering Milky Way. The village of Lybster sits right on the NC500 and is five minutes’ drive from your base at Orchid Pods; it has a post office, well-stocked general store and a café.

Daisy camping pod

Liked I cannot rate this place highly enough. We booked last minute after being let down by another campsite and Jonathan had the place made up and ready for us in around an hour. Absolutely stunning views of the North Sea direct from the pod, and a beautiful site. Jonathan has put a lot of work in building the pods and gardens himself and it shows.

All bedding and towels were fresh, with added tea / coffee / sugar / fresh milk / fresh eggs in the pod to make our stay even better. Very impressive size, these types of pods can be quite unforgiving if you are tall but he has accommodated for anyone up to 6’6 to feel comfortable.

All in all our only regret was not being able to stay longer! We will be back!

Local attractions

There is a nine-hole golf course in Lybster if you fancy a round, or you can have a wander down to the harbour (both five minutes’ drive) to see the old herring port and lighthouse. When the weather’s good, brave a dip in the sea from the neighbouring beach. Discover more about the former local herring trade with a scramble down steep Whaligoe Steps (10 minutes) to the abandoned fishing harbour, or see how the 16th-century aristocracy lived in the opulent apartments and formal gardens of Dunrobin Castle (55 minutes). If you’d like to learn more about our Royal Family, take a tour of the public rooms at the Castle of Mey (50 minutes), the northern Scottish retreat of the King and Queen. Head to RSPB Dunnet Head (55 minutes) to see the UK’s largest colony of orange-beaked Atlantic puffins nesting alongside thousands of other raucous seabirds, or join boat cruises from John O’Groats (40 minutes) to (hopefully) spot majestic Orca whales.
