  • Comfortable pods on a farm 15 minutes' drive from Livingston
  • Half an hour from central Edinburgh by car or train
  • Playground, games room and kitchen/diner
For a glamping getaway with a difference, grab one of the tiptop tipis at Hilly Cow Wigwams, a site on a lovely Lothian farm just outside Livingston. This is very much a rural site, but the centre of Edinburgh is around a half-hour drive away (or, even better, a 30-minute train ride from the local station, Kirknewton). As it’s a working farm, you’re likely to come across hens, pigs, sheep, horses or cows during your stay – and possibly even little lambs in the right season. Whenever your hol is planned, lots of walking and bike routes can be picked up locally (including those heading up into the Pentland Hills Regional Park, less than a mile away), and there’s plenty of space to run about on the grounds if you’d prefer to burn energy closer to base. A playground is on site for the kids, plus there’s a games room in the amenity block, which also houses a kitchen/diner and some rather smart bathrooms. And how about the accommodation? Well, stays here are in cosy insulated wooden wigwams, each kitted out with beds, a heater, kettle, fridge and mirror. Outside is a private deck with a picnic bench and campfire area – and either is a fine place to relax with a drink while taking in some fab views over the Forth Valley. To bulk up on the basics, the shops and other amenities in Livingston’s centre are around a 15-minute drive away.

What customers say

Family-run spot with clean, comfy wigwams & great views. Hosts are lovely, kitchen & games room a hit. Play park & farm tours are a bonus. Comfy mattresses a bit hit-and-miss for some, but handy for Edinburgh.

Wigwam

Liked Stayed for one night as a stop on our travels. It was pouring with rain and there was a yellow weather warning in place. The host, Lesley, very kindly upgraded us to an en suite pod so we didn't have to go out into the rain to use the facilities in the main building. The pod itself was clean and spacious with all the basic amenities provided - kettle, toaster, fridge, cups, glasses and some tea bags. The string lights within the pod gave a really cosy feel, especially with the rain hammering down outside.

There is also a shared indoor chill out space near to the pods which has a television, table tennis table, cooking and washing up facilities. We had been travelling and staying in pods for approx 10 days and this was the only site which gave us access to an oven.

A lovely place to stay. We would definitely return.

Wigwam

Liked The campsite had fab facilities including a play park and farm tour. The facilities were quirky, clean and more than we needed. We even woke to a visit from the easter bunny on sunday morning. The staff were friendly and made our visit.

Wigwam (private bathroom amenities)

Liked We stayed in Bertie Bull (pod with en-suite toilet & shower) the pod was clean and tidy. Came with a microwave, toaster & kettle. Nice wee touch having a couple of cups / glasses with tea, coffee & sachets of milk.
Lovely family run site. Kitchen in the big house has everything you would need. Plates, pots & pans. Air fryer, oven & hob. Our favourite was the fresh eggs in the wee basket. The play parks & indoor games room are great for the kids. Little fire pits are in front of the pod which is nice in the evenings. The views were spectacular day & night. Farm tour was super interesting, our 6 year old couldn’t wait to go round again the following day. Thank you to the whole family for making us feel welcome. ❤️

Local attractions

The attractions around this park are as offbeat as the wigwams inside of it. Drop by Potter Around for craft workshops (10 minutes’ drive), scale the walls at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (15 minutes) or have a crack at clay pigeon shooting (20 minutes). Slightly more conventional things to do include rifling the racks for bargains at the Livingston Designer Outlet (15 minutes) and visiting the animals at the Five Sisters Zoo (20 minutes). Creatures can also be viewed at Almond Valley, a watermill with a farm park, mini trains and play areas (20 minutes), or at the famed Edinburgh Zoo (half an hour). Stately homes more your thing? Lope around Linlithgow Palace (half an hour) to meander around the main residences of Scotland’s monarchs in the 15th and 16th centuries; Edinburgh, around the same distance, has enough intriguing architecture to fill days and days of explores, from the modern Holyrood parliament building to the ancient hilltop castle.
