  • Friendly animals on site; 1.5 miles from a shop, pub and restaurant
Whether you're touring the mainland's Highland highlights along the North Coast 500 or heading over the sea to the Isle of Skye, you'll get a warm welcome at Auchtertyre Farm, a friendly and informal rural spot five minutes' drive to the east of Kyle of Lochalsh. This family-run site is located on a small working farm, where the owners raise horses and ponies at the foot of gorgeous Auchtertyre Hill. It's generally a pretty laidback place, with generous pitch sizes, plenty of peace and quiet and family-friendly vibes all round. When the weather is fine, guests at Auchtertyre Farm are welcome to set up a barbecue for a sizzle or to pick up some of the farm's fresh local produce for a picnic. A handy shop, pub and restaurant are on hand a mile and a half down the road for when the forecast takes a turn, all of which are accessible via a paved route or an off-road path. The area's surrounding scenery means that bikers, hikers and adventurous activity enthusiasts will be well catered for here, while history fans will find top heritage sites like the gorgeous Eilean Donan Castle within a five-minute drive.

Local attractions

There's so much to see and do within just a couple of miles of Auchtertyre Farm, whether you want to photograph the sunset, loch and castle at Eilean Donan (five minutes' drive), take a waymarked woodland walk through the forests around Lochalsh (five minutes), hop aboard Red Moon Cruises for a tour of the coast (five minutes) or head to the nearest swimming pool and leisure centre (five minutes). Thanks to the road bridge, crossing over to the Isle of Skye takes around 10 minutes without traffic. Getting to well-known scenic spots like the Fairy Pools (an hour) and the Old Man of Storr (an hour and 10 minutes) should definitely be on the agenda, but there's a lot to see and do in the island's biggest town of Portree (an hour). Even if the Hebrides are going to be your focus, there are lots of parts of the local mainland that are also well worth exploring. The Falls of Glomach (30 minutes), for instance, is one of the highest and most-isolated waterfalls in Britain – so much so that getting there involves a 12-mile round trip on foot – but the views at the other end are more than worth it.
