Want to see how the other half lives? Pack a bag and park yourself in the walled garden at Paxton House Caravan Park. This Berwickshire pile was built in the Palladian style in 1763 for a nobleman who planned to live in it, then inherited a castle and moved there instead. Staying in this small park on the 80 acres of grounds, visitors can take in this popular landmark at their leisure, with river walks and boat trips down the Tweed and/or by delving into the history of the house and its collections of art and furniture. The kids can let off steam on the adventure playground and follow woodland trails to discover wildlife and maybe encounter a fairy or two. For practical things like pubs and grub and shops, as well as sandy beaches, estuary walks, ruins, sea safaris and fishing trips, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a brilliantly convenient 10 minutes' drive away.

Liked Was pleased to see pirch 14 was vacant as that is our favorite pitch. Some to a lovely lady regarding our extra night on the Monday due to the road repairs

Disliked The Hugh stones protecting the grass verge as could not be seen as we turned the corner. Resulting in damage to caravan. Also the very large potholes at the entrance but these were repaired during our stay.

Really loved the quiet and the well looked after pitches. The shower/toilet blocks always clean and tidy. Having two spaniels the walks were amazing. Unfortunately it's out of season so visiting the house was not available but we kind lady let us see the renovations in the new to be ball room.

Overall very nice relaxing week stay.

Liked Great location. The nearby village of Paxton had a great bar/restaurant.
The site pitches were large and very enclosed within the walled garden. The walks around the house estate were very pleasant

Liked Great site we go to every so often. Lovely peaceful surroundings and walks with great pub nearby. Nicely kept by volunteers.

Disliked Standpipe for cassette waste was frozen so could maybe do with being lagged. The pitchup listing still says no toilets but that’s wrong, they have 2 large units with toilet and shower.

Liked Rang last minute and was able to book no problem. Lovely, clean site, very peaceful place, slept really well, had a hot shower at the shower block the next day, would definitely recommend

Liked The pitch as such and surrounding nature is great. Nice opportunities for a walk

Disliked Amenities too minimal: no dish washing basin or counter. Wash basin in toilet is too small and low. Invalid toilets integrated in shower and wash cabin is unpractical.
When quiet is no problem but when 2 people shower at the same time ( which is is usually the case when its morning and terrain is more full) no one can get to the toilet.

Liked Site based in lovely old walled garden of a beautiful estate with lovely walkd. Lots of space between pitches and most are level. Good waste facilities and all very accessable. 10 minute walk to village pub with excellent restaurant and a 15 minute taxi ride to Berwick with nice shops and restaurants / cafes and sights.

Local attractions

History is never far away in these parts, and the glimpses you’ll get of Lindisfarne, half an hour's drive away, will doubtless lure you out during your stay. Wild and peaceful, the ruins of the priory and the castle point to the long and turbulent human past of the place, while the colonies of puffins and waders carry on regardless. Check tide times if heading out by car; boat trips to and around make a leisurely way to visit with seal and puffin spotting possibilities en route. There are many more castles to peruse, if that’s your penchant: Bamburgh, still occupied but open to visitors, is half an hour’s drive away. Despite being 700 years old, Alnwick (45 minutes) is also still home to the descendants of its original owners and a must-see for JK Rowling fans as the film location for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The little villages of Beadnell and Seahouses (45 minutes away) form the gateway to the Northumbria Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a sea-hugging zone stuffed with chances to go rockpooling and paddleboarding, plus coastal paths and bike trails as well as a haven for wildflowers and (yes, really) wild cattle. Half an hour’s drive gets you to the edge of Northumbria National Park, packed with Roman remains, climbing in the Cheviot Hills and paths around Kielder Water. Further afield, the museums, culture, lively pubs and (of course) the castle of Edinburgh are very doable for a day trip, an hour and 20 minutes away.
