  • Well-maintained and peaceful five-acre site in rural Aberdeenshire
  • A 20-minute drive from Banff; 25 minutes from Fraserburgh
  • Direct access to the North Sea Cycle Route; shared kitchen
It’s all about traditional outdoor holidays with fab farm views at East Balthangie Caravan Park, a site open all year round in rural Aberdeenshire where guests can settle down close to cracking coastal spots like the rugged coast of Banff and Buchan and the sandy beaches and dunes to the east. In fact, those bringing their bikes can get straight to the seaside pedalling, as there's direct access to the scenic North Sea Cycle Route. The folk here say that their aim is to recreate what outdoor hols were like in the 1950s: as such, what you see is what you get, with the only additional charges being for extras like use of the machines in the laundry room. This is very much a 'live and let live' kind of place, where guests have plenty of room to pitch up in stunning Scottish surrounds and take in the peace and quiet. The facilities here are traditional and well-maintained, including ladies' and gents' toilets, shower rooms with power showers and hairdryers, a laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers, and a communal kitchen with a microwave, toaster and kettles. There's also a games room, where you can play pool, table tennis, table football or simply sit in the lounge area and watch TV or choose a book from the 'take a book, leave a book' library. Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead except when in the dedicated dog-walking area. East Balthangie Caravan Park is well set up for outdoor living: picnic tables have been strategically placed in some of the best spots for alfresco lunches. Crop growth allowing, you're also free to take strolls on the paths that crisscross the adjacent farmland. The nearest supermarket is in Cuminestown (10 minutes' drive). For a drink or pub-cooked meal, head into New Deer (10 minutes).

What customers say

This tranquil, neat park has roomy spots & ace owners. Super clean facilities, great camp kitchen, and games room are a hit. A secure dog run's a big plus. While some say loos are a bit old-school, most reckon it's a ripper and will be back. Access road needs a spruce-up.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet and the views across the countryside. Having a secure area on site for the dogs was a real bonus. Although the toilet and shower block is basic, it was very clean, and for those who would need the use of a hair drier, that was provided. The site is fairly central to allow visits to places of interest.

From the manager: Thank you, Lorna, for your lovely review- we're pleased you found the secure dog exercise area of use. From our own travelling experience, it's always a worry finding a site where you have peace of mind for the dogs and with a decent-sized, safe acreage for exercise! Safe travels ongoing! J&A

Liked Perfect little hidden gem! John and Anne are the best hosts, nothing is too much trouble. Forgotten something? Don't worry about it, they'll have it to lend it to you. It's a simple site the embodies true camping. Even the amenities have been tastefully constructed to give the feel of summer camping vibes from the 50's and 60's. The secure dog field is kept well and the whole site is quiet and tidy. Perfectly placed for lots of hiking or just sitting around with a good book. We will definitely return.

From the manager: That's our ethos got right there!
Thank you for a lovely review, and we'll see you again soon :) J&A

Liked Ligging en ontvangst. Mooie omgeving met veel steencirkels. Verrassende mooie ruine van kasteel rosehearty.

Disliked Verouderde toiletten, maar wel schoon en veel voorzieningen voor kampeerders op de fiets etc.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Bedankt voor je recensie!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Vielen Dank für Ihre nette Bewertung.

Local attractions

Entranced by the scenery on site? There's plenty of things to see and do without straying far from base, with top picks being seaside strolls in Banff (20 minutes' drive) and tours of (purportedly haunted) Delgatie Castle (10 minutes). Aden Country Park (20 minutes), meanwhile, is a great option for picnics, barbecues and manageable trails; you can also poke your nose into a gift shop that sells local crafts and the artfully laid out Aberdeenshire Farming Museum. Got a thing for blinking beacons? Make tracks for the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh (25 minutes), a historic lighthouse – the oldest on the Scottish mainland, no less – that was built right on top of a 16th-century castle. After having a look-see at the largest lens collection in the UK, other old buildings like Haddo House (25 minutes), Fyvie Castle (25 minutes) and Slains Castle (45 minutes) are up for inspection. At a loose end on a Sunday morn? A rummage through the weekly market and car boot sale at Thainstone (40 minutes) should see to that.
